  • There’s going to be a lot of rethinking to be done by a lot of companies with regard to the RTI clarification.

    Can you expand on this?

Many employers have a set payroll date which isn’t the last day of the month. Interestingly when I raised the “on the payroll” terminology I was rounded on by several people, much more knowledgeable than I, that it was accepted it meant start date in the absence of other qualifiers.

good point with the rest of your post, I hadn’t thought that far ahead before I posted despite mitigating for this very situation  :#

What does the RTI mean, and why would this differ from my employment starting before March 19th?
RTI is real time information, payroll info submitted to hmrc

So in my example, employee is paid on the 25th feb, info for that month is submitted to hmrc the month after.  I’m not actually sure if there is a set date for RTI or if it just needs to be anytime within x weeks of payroll, I try to stay out of payroll as much as I can

You have to run payroll on or before the date the wage is paid.

I'm still trying to understand the scenario of an  'ex' employee and Furlough. Why would a company that someone has just left furlough them?  This means re-hiring them, paying 80% of their wage until they can claim it back - this is a nightmare for companies who may have rejoiced at an employee leaving...….. a HR problem in the brewing!  I know of a company who now get lots of calls from ex employees wanting to be furloughed... why would a company do this?

I do believe I might have been one of the people who said you were wrong (although not more knowledgeable than you), and I sincerely apologise :)
(in my defense, at the time industry bodies and employment lawyers were advising that it was *not* RTI date)

Oh no gonna-be-debt-free I'm so sorry I didn't mean on here, I'm a newbie  :) it was on another forum.

I think a lot of people thought the same, I only gave it a fleeting thought, an EL service I used to sense check some stuff for me thought the same too!  Even our payroll guy agreed!
