Washing machine won’t start!

It was working fine this morning but now it won’t start the cycle. It makes all the right noises until I press the start button. It makes a shorter ‘beep’ than usual and then nothing happens. The water doesn’t start filling. I’m not technically minded at all so unless this is something simple I’ll have to get a new one but…

Couple of years ago our machine suddenly began doing nothing sometimes when I pressed the ON button. I discovered that if you apply some light pressure to the door with your knee (as if pushing it to close) it then always starts. The door HAS always been closed properly whenever the non-starting thing happens, but the push seems to galvanise it into action.
OH calls it my "Fonzie tap" when he sees me doing it!
