Washing machine won’t start!

Couple of years ago our machine suddenly began doing nothing sometimes when I pressed the ON button. I discovered that if you apply some light pressure to the door with your knee (as if pushing it to close)  it then always starts.  The door HAS always been closed properly whenever the non-starting thing happens, but the push seems to galvanise it into action. 
OH calls it my "Fonzie tap" when he sees me doing it!
