UK-listed clean energy stocks up 170% in 2020

UK-listed clean energy and technology stocks are up 170% on average for the year, but investment levels will need to continue for decades to meet climate change goals, according to analysis by finnCap.

The analyst's latest quarterly report found annual investments in renewables of $350bn (€291bn) are required for the next 30 years to meet the Paris Agreement goals on climate change.

The report highlights how the “good versus bad” energy split has been evidenced by a “swathe of write-downs” in the book value of assets from big international oil companies (IOCs).

Such write-downs have already amounted to $48bn across the major IOCs in 2020 alone, said finnCap.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

I would love to see more detail on that. It is indeed good news but it does sound a bit too good to be true. The only company referred to by name is Orsted but it is only up about 50% for the year and it is listed in Denmark. I note that the press release groups together clean energy and tech. The tech sector has had a meteoric year but does anyone know which are the high performing clean energy stocks? They may be worth a look.

Thanks. That will have been an exciting ride if you’d owned them since 2018. Well done if you got in at the right time. I’ve never been brave enough to invest in AIM.

It wasn't a suggestion to invest and I share your concerns with AIM just providing an example to give some support to Mart's article.

I had genuinely struggled to find listed green energy companies on the main FTSE market where I could park my money with the hope of a decent return. I found the investment trusts focussing on green energy were trading at a significant premium to NAV and their performance had been poor. I ended up plumping for Orsted in May and despite a wobble over the last month or so I am still 22% up. I also invested in John Laing despite their troubles and have seen their share price slump. As with tech shares I do think prices of  ESG stocks and funds have been driven up too high by retail investors and wonder how long it will last. (I have, though, been saying that about tech stocks for the last couple of months and exited Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft and Zoom way too early.) At least with Orsted there is something tangible which I find reassuring. My focus at the moment is on ‘value’ stocks.

A 1% rise in FTSE this week saw our ISA benefit marginally to the tune of 0.3% and gaining significant ground on the Green Energy Storage Fund which fell back 2% for the second week running, thus reducing the gap between the two, to a mere 12%.
    Mind the Gap!
Since the last post above not much variation had occurred until this last week so thought an update wouldn't go amiss. FTSE is still hovering around the 6k mark but the Greeen Energy Storage fund has fallen back 3% subsequently while our ISA increased by 1% so bringing the gap down to 8%.
    Getting closer!
