Paper Receipt's

Hi All,
Today i went to my local Halfords (during the Covid - 19 crisis).
Due to the current crisis, they were operating a policy of.
No one in store. Desk at the entrance. Queue up outside. On your turn tell them what you would like. They would go/get. You pay and leave. Next person.
Which i found to be a totally acceptable way of doing things in this crisis.
It was then,
My turn.
I asked for what i required, they went off and got my required items.
Then it was the process of payment.
"Can i have an email address please sir"
"No"
"We need an email address for you receipt"
"No thankyou, I would like a standard paper one please"
"Sir, due to coronaviras, we are not issueing paper receipt's"
"O.K. Why is that"
"Because of cross contamination sir"
"O.K. But you have just brought me over those products, and Covid - 19 would be less likely to stay for 72 hours on a paper receipt then it would stay on the plastic of the products that you have just brought over to me. Therefor, there is more chance of cross contamination, on the products you have just handled and brought over to me then there would be on a paper receipt"
"Sorry sir, if you would like a receipt, then we need your email address"
"I do not want to give you my personal details."
"You can pay and take away the items with no receipt if you would like, but if you would like a receipt then we need your email address."
I left without buying the items.
My 1st question is:- Are they leagally allowed to just offer me a receipt via email and not a paper one?
My 2nd question is:- If they are. Then what about uncle Bob that dosn't have email but wants a receipt?
I was always tought that you do not buy ANTHING WITHOUT A RECEIPT.
Please let me know your opinions and possible facts as to if they can offer just a receipt via email.
regards
David

Legally, they don't have to give you a receipt at all. Unless you're vat registered and request a vat receipt.
But equally, you do not have to buy from them if you do not like the terms they are offering. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride2 -

As above, there's no general requirement to provide a receipt. And providing an email address to them needn't require you to provide any "personal details" - just an email address you can access. You could have set up halfordsareidiots@gmail.com while you were in the shop if you wanted.

Seriously?!?!?!
I would personally prefer if companies would email me the receipt less likely to loose it than a paper one, You don't have to give personal information just set up a burner email like above ^^^Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada  :dance:1 -
What a colossal waste of time and effort just to prove a point.14

Some people are just born to be difficult. On the plus side when you left I imagine the people in the queue behind you and the staff all had a good laugh about how you acted 😀6

So, let this be a learning lesson for you.
Setup an email address that you can access for all e-receipts to be sent to.
That way they do not fade like paper does, do not get left in packaging, fall down the back of the sofa or deteriorate in the back of
your wallet - like paper ones do.
Iceland offer you the opportunity to not have a receipt, this is something I always take them up on so as to not waste the paper.
Screwfix do email ones, much preferred.
They stilt don't know exactly who I am though.
