Smell in my house from next door

Gale - How have you been getting on with your problem since your last post?
Did you remove the backs of the cupboards in the end?
I would personally pester the hell out of your Council to get a witness if they will come out again but it sounds like you are going to have to go to another phone outside of the hearing of your neighbour. Perhaps visit the Council offices and correspond by email/letter only and tell them that.
I had never heard of gapseal and will give it a google. The smell I get has not been present for quite a while as my neighbour has been spending a lot of time looking after her male friend at his place which is lucky for me as I won't be able to look into this for a few months yet.Gordon Brown ate my hamster0 -
Hi, sorry to hear of your problem. I would certainly be unhappy having to live with smoke smells from everyone else. I haven't read all your replies but I just had a thought?
Do you have smoke detectors? How sensitive are they? If I were you I would install more and put one as close to this persons house as possible. When it keeps going off and the fire brigade get fed up of being called out....perhaps she will be more thoughtful and not want kill everyone else around her.
As a non smoking family as well.....this is something we feel strongly about.....in fact we can now go out for dinner to restaurants whereas before we didn't because of the problem. Good Luck

and in fact the downstairs neighbour listens to our telephone conversations and makes sure there is no cigarette smoke smell when they come round.
if that's the case, then you need to phone from outside the house, so she can't hear you, or e-mail the person instead.
You sound like you need to look for a swap anyway, if you feel she is listening to your phone conversationsMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Definitely worth a try.
The smell I get is more vile than smoke although it is from secondhand smoke. I think the smell I get is also mixed with air freshener and normal house smell that has travelled.Gordon Brown ate my hamster0 -
We have a similar problem with our neighbours' fire. They burn logs and the smoke goes straight through the brickwork, into our chimney space (where we have a gas fire and back boiler) then into our living room. It really stinks, especially when they put the fire out!
We've complained about it a few times. They are nice people but are very defensive about the fire, saying it "shouldn't do that". But our last boiler serviceman said they should have plastered their side of the fire brickwork to stop the smoke coming through the bricks.
We may have to get some sort of barrier - although it's not fair we should pay the cost when it's their bloomin fire! :mad:0 -
No household smoke detector is set off from cigarette smoke, if it did set them off then no smoker in the country would have a smoke detector with a working battery in it installed in their home.0

Perhaps they've drilled small holes in the walls and are watching you !!:icotbaske0

is there any chance of a partner or child being a smoker in your house without you knowing it?0

Perhaps you should put a smoke detector up your chimney, so it goes off every time it 'smells' smoke. That would risk you falling out with otherwise friendly neighbours.
Would you offer to pay half the cost of them sealing their brickwork?
Are they burning logs in a smokeless zone, could you stop them that way??
Tricky situation, I love the smell of a log fire, but prefer to be on the side of the chimney I can watch the fire from aswell.:pMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
