Nominate Your Chosen Charities

Thanks everyone. Nominations are now closed.

IMPORTANT: Do not nominate without reading the 'what to include in your nomination' at the end of this

Last week you voted to split this year's charity fund equally between MoneySaving kids (a fund to look at how to educate children about Money, that isn't funded by banks) and the charity fund.

What is the charity fund?

Money is donated to five charities from the site's revenue (see 'how the site makes money'). The site follows a non-profit driven ethos, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make money. The sheer scale of the site and near 1 million visits a month, means there is cash, and I like to put as much as I can towards doing some good (after I've paid the MoneySaving team, expenses, and myself).

What's the process?

It's a three step process to decide the charities.

A. You nominate. Any user of the site (which means anyone of course) can nominate a charity registered in the UK to receive the money.

B. There's a short list. Five of the site's most regular users (the volunteer board guides) will be asked to short-list 14 charities. The following are the criteria they will be asked to use when short listing.

i. Relevance: Charities which are relevant to both the subject base and usership of MoneySavingExpert.com will be given priority.

ii. National and International: Roughly two thirds of the selection should be UK based charities and one third overseas/international.

iii. The money should make a difference. Small charities where the cash won't just go into a big pot, but will make a real difference to the charity itself will be favoured over larger charities.

C. The Vote. Nominations end on Saturday 11th June. Next week there will be a vote on the site announced in the poll of the 15 charities (for those paying attention the extra charity is my own personal nomination). The top five charities will then have the money paid to them from the charity fund in the proportion of the vote. The winners will be announced in the tip.

To nominate a charity - please click reply below (if you're not registered on the forum, which is different to signing up to the email, you will have to do so. Of course it's totally free and your email is never used for anything else).

One more thing. The more users of this site, the more money there is for the charity fund and MoneySaving kids. The best way to get regular users is to recommend people join the distribution list of the free Money Tip. Please recommend it to everyone you know.

WHAT YOU NEED TO INCLUDE IN YOUR NOMINATION.

Please put in the following order

1. The Official Name of the Charity

2. The Website of the Charity

3. A desciption of no more than 8 words of the charity

4. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported.

If a charity has already been nominated, please do not do so again, you can show your support by clicking the 'thank you' button for that post. Also please no other discussions in this thread, it is purely for nominating.

Whilst you may nominate as many charities as you choose, remember they will be shortlisted, so it makes life easier if you just nominate one.

Supporting Children - Stopping Cruelty to ALL Children

I support them, because my opinion of them has changed dramtically over the last 6 months. They are not the nosey people some would led you to believe. We have had continous support from the NSPCC over the last 6 months - this support will be indefinate - there is no time limit on how long the help will be. They have been there when we need them - day or night, no time scale, no set schedule or appointments - our support woman has been the pillar we have needed and as I cannot support or name her personally, I will support the whole organisation. Children are our greatest asset, yet there are those that chose to hurt them. It must stop and with their help it will.

    4. My friend Hmad grew up in the Moroccan village of El Borj in the Atlas mountains but was one of the few children lucky enough to get an education. Most Berbers cannot read or write. Although he now lives in the UK he's still very close to the people there. The charity has bought a piece of land and is raising the funds to build its own school and buy modern equipment including computers. It also wants to provide funds to start small businesses and to provide medical aid and health education.

    St. John Ambulance

    http://www.sja.org.uk/

The UK's leading First Aid, transport & care charity

St. John Ambulance's 45,000 volunteers support communities throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland by providing First Aid cover at thousands of public events, from small village fetes to large music concerts and events like the London Marathon. St. John Ambulance volunteers give over 10,000 hours of service every day; without their presence, many of these events could not take place. Over half of St. John Ambulance volunteers are under the age of 26. St. John Ambulance trains thousands of people, including schoolchildren, in lifesaving First Aid each year and campaigns for First Aid to be included in the National Curriculum. St. John operates the largest fleet of ambulances in the UK (over 1200 vehicles), but SJA is not part of the NHS and does not receive core Government funding. St. John Ambulance relies on donations from members of the public, companies and trusts, to carry on their charitable work.

    3. Information & support for young people/children with hemiplegia

    4. HemiHelp was formed in 1990 to offer information and support to children and young people with hemiplegia, to their families or carers and to the professionals who work with them and to increase general awareness of the condition. Childhood hemiplegia is a condition, similar to cerebral palsy, affecting one side of the body. It is caused by damage to some part of the brain. The effects are similar to that of a stroke and it affects around one child in a 1,000. The charity has grown over the years but is very 'family orientated'. It was formed by parents to support each other and they need all the help they can get to raise awareness and give support to their members.

    WORLD VISION

    Website here

From world vision alternative gift catalogue - build a secondary school for £3303. Eager young minds are waiting to learn, but a shortage of schools keeps thousands of young people in poverty. This wonderful gift opens the new horizons that education can bring.

First saw this site on here last Christmas, thought it was a great idea and £3303 won't put too much of a dent in our Charity Fund.
