You can drive legally: only the photocard has expired, your licence is valid until your 70th birthday [Road Traffic Act 1988, section 99(1(a)). The actual expiry date is shown in column 11 on the back of your licence.

Failure to renew the photocard is a separate (minor) offence, but it's unlikely a prosecution would succeed in the current circumstances.

I wish that were correct as if it was we would have nothing to worry about. All that 11 tells us is when the type of vehicle we can drive remains valid. The driving license date at 4 is the date it expires.

Exactly. Column 11 shows the date when your entitlement to drive that class of vehicle expires. That is normally the day before your 70th birthday, as laid down in law. Your entitlement to drive does not expire when the photocard does.
