You don't always have to show your appreciation with money. There are other ways.

Perhaps you could answer the door naked and make their day memorable that way.
Haha, nice idea although I don't think it would make their day if I answered the door naked,LOL

That has happened, but never in a good way.

On another note, I cannot believe some of the responses on here. I've been to the US, I know tip culture is awful over there, but there is nothing wrong with showing appreciation, especially at a time like this, and shaming someone for daring to give a tip is a disgusting attitude to have. Services like this are not straight forward jobs, one street might be accessible and easy to park on, but not all of them are. And trust me it's the people who've ordered 400kg of shopping to a second floor flat with no parking close by that are the most ungrateful.

How many care workers or cleaners have YOU tipped recently?
How many have directly provided me a service, answer, none.
    Wow, you really think that?

This is my problem with tipping, the visible workers get a tip, the hidden ones working away at equally essential jobs get squat, barely even minimum wage.

Also, I find it mega awkward and it’s really inconsistent that some jobs attract tips while loads of others that are harder or lower paid don’t.
Precisely. Wonder if these people on the front line who aren't paid a vast amount are being tipped for their care? Doubt it.
I know of some NHS workers who have had contact from the powers that be that basically tell them they'll lose their job if they don't volunteer in XYZ areas. These people are not paid a great deal. I'm on more and i'm not paid a great deal. They've been advised to take out wills in advance. So they're likely at higher risk than your delivery driver, they don't have a choice and they're not that highly paid, but they're less likely to get a tip.
As you can tell, i've never been a fan of tipping. I don't ask for it, i don't expect it and on the rare occasions i've been given one i've always asked them to keep it. If they're insistent then i take it to just get the moment dealt with but i have my wage. If the public is pleasant then when so many are not i take that alone as my 'tip'.

How do you know that I don't? Again, it is my cash, and I'll do with it what I want.

Then you've already decided, so just do it. Leave it on the floor with a bucket of soap and water next to it if you're that insistent.

this is effectively my original question. How do I safely get a small piece of plasticised paper to the driver, safely.
Well how does a postman get your letters to you safely?

He puts them through the letter box yeah, but he still touched them. How do couriers get your parcels to you? They put them on the floor, ring the bell and step back, but they've still touched them. Same way takeaway delivery drivers are doing, but they've still touched the boxes.
When you do your essential food shop, do you wash every item down? Maybe you do but if you don't, how many others have been rummaging through what you've bought before you put it in your trolley?

You'll have to forgive the odd quoting. This forum is causing me right bother. At first it was working but then it started putting other things in quotes even though they weren't highlighted.

It's nice for the driver to get a tip, but the person who picks the order in the store won't - and they're probably on a lower wage and a higher risk of infection.
You could add a box of chocolates or something to your order, then tell the driver he can take it out before he gives you the order. But he might not be allowed to do that.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Well yes, what a stupid question, I literally do not have a cleaner working for me, nor any care workers.

So you never go anywhere where cleaners work or benefit from their efforts?  That’s literally impossible (well, pre-lockdown anyway).

Care workers work for society, that’s all of us, you may need them on a more personal level one day.

Well reddit warned me there were some idiots on here, I wasn't expecting to find one on my first outing.

One more time as clearly as I can make it for you. If I had a cleaner who came to my house to clean, I would tip. I would not tip a cleaner who works at currys who made sure the ipad aisle was free from child vomit. Equally if I had a driver deliver groceries to me I would tip. If my neighbours had a driver deliver to them, I would not. Having said that, all of this is subject to how good a job they do, because that's how tips work.

Working for a cause does not fit into the reasons why people tip. That's not to say that what they do isn't important, it just doesn't work that way. Tips are given to individuals for their efforts made directly on behalf of other small groups. The service is face to face and is subject to the social etiquette of both parties. As you say the backroom staff don't get tips, but their work is straightforward, wash pots, pack shopping, clean the floors, whatever attitude they take towards their task doesn't matter as long as it gets done. Put simply, if I came to your door with literally half a ton of shopping and gave you attitude, slammed the boxes about, and was genuinely unfriendly I'm sure you'd report me. You going to report the guy who picked it off the shelves calling you every name under the sun and slamming the boxes around? That's the difference.

Yes, that’s clear, that’s exactly what I take issue with and think is wrong.

There’s a difference between not understanding you and not agreeing with you, 😉
