This does seem useful but also very complex from the amount of questions that are raised by everyone here - just checking my understanding, so you can claim up to £6 a week from the employer or if they don't accept you can claim via HMRC which is at a rate of £1.20 per week but you can do this for the entire year even if you haven't worked from home for the whole of the year?
  • Hi,
When I did this, it was really straightforward and I only needed my Gateway ID. I was done really quickly, there were not many questions at all. Now, trying with a friend, looks like it's asking tonnes of questions, including company information, even though we are selecting the same 20/21 year and no other expenses... Has the microsite changed or is my friend's situation different from mine? It looks like the website is taking my friend down the route of 'already claimed some other expenses', although my friend has not done that.
  • Hi
does anyone if this is still something I can claim although I am no longer employed since end October? I worked for the whole of lockdown from home and was paid the first months expenses via my employer but nothing after that??
    Thanks

    Yes
  • I work and my employer deducts my tax through the PAYE system. I also have a house that I let and complete a self assessment for that. Do I have to claim via the self assessment system or can I claim through the other system? I’m confused as it’s not clear what to do when you do both. 🤷‍♀️

HMRC seem to want you to claim via Self Assessment in this situation however I'm not sure they could stop you getting it included in your tax code during they year if you insisted.

Notwithstanding that you would still have to include the claim on your Self Assessu return anyway otherwise you would have to pay back any tax relief received during the year.

EDIT* Sorted - I worked out where'd I'd gone wrong! Thanks.
Hi, I'm having the same problem - what was it you'd been doing wrong?

Well, that didn't come out the way I was expecting! New tax code received today for 2020/2021 which means I'll be paying more tax, not less, after submitting the claim for relief on job expenses of £312.
New tax code 1102LX replaces old code 1419L. Tax code notice states "Due to an in year adjustment to your tax code(s) we think that you will owe HMRC £322.00. So that you pay the right tax for the year, we have included an adjustment to reduce your tax-free allowance by £1791.00 to collect the £322.00 tax in equal instalments from now on by increasing the tax deducted from your wage, salary or pension so that the £322.00 is paid by 5 April 2021."
£312 is recorded on the new tax code notice as Job Expenses, so I should get the tax relief on that.
I can only assume that by submitting the claim I've alerted HMRC to re-check my status & they have now assessed that I was paying too little tax (regardless of the claim for relief on £312). I'm fine with this BTW, if it is the case, just warning to others that you may not get the result you are hoping for!
I see that the 'X' at the end of my tax code means that at the end of the tax year HMRC will assess my actual income for April 2020 to 5 April 2021 and contact me if I owe any (more) tax or if they owe me a refund.
Hopefully I've understood all that right, happy to be corrected. Cheers!
Did u figure out why? I just had the same but the adjustment is huge and doesnt make any sense to me

I think you might be able to compare your new tax code with the previous one on your Personal Tax Account to see what has changed.

Thanks I logged in and that helped, they have grossly overestimated my earnings so I submitted a correction hopefully that will sort it.
