DON'T give up your housing benefit claim if there is ANY way you can avoid it!!!   Even if it means spending your savings or selling things to get through this period.

Too late for the OP because they've already claimed UC.
  • I have a Spanish lodger who teaches Spanish at a local college. He is only paid when working so now can't pay me the rent.  Can a EU citizen get UC and/or would the local council help with housing benefit as a lodger?

I am self employed and earn well below the amount stated, so went to fill out Martin's Benefit calculator but can't see a description of where I live. I have lived since my marriage in my (now pensioner) husband's house, which he has owned outright for years before our marriage, and "Mortgage or owned outright" would imply I (part-)own it, which I do not, and will never do. What's the answer?

As you're married then you own the house along with your partner. For means tested benefits you claim as a couple and you put both details into a benefits calculator. Although if both of you are state pension age you won't be able to claim Universal Credit.

Too late. Once UC claimed HB is over. I don't see why you would say this anyway. Financially UC will provide similar level of rent support as HB. It does come with additional conditionality but this isn't a problem for everyone.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

It will depend on their status and whether they have access to public funds. Better to start your own thread instead of asking the question on someone else's thread, questions get missed by doing this.
