I had a conversation over the phone with soemone from my housing assoc about paying rent during the covid lockdown, I explained I had claimed UC and they said that I wouldn't be able to go back onto housing benefit afterwards, the conversation moved on before I could ask why, does anyone know?

Because when you claim UC your HB claim automatically closes after two weeks. Help with rent is paid to you through UC which ha# replaced HB. You will actually get paid twice for the two week overlap.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1

I understand that but they meant AFTER I sign off from UC in the future

You can't reclaim any of the legacy benefits once you've come off them.2

So would I have to remain on UC and just claim the housing component?Spoonie_Turtle said:You can't reclaim any of the legacy benefits once you've come off them.

That is correct.Gaz1971 said:

- When on someone else's be it a road, a pavement, a right of way or a property there are rules. Don't assume there are none.
- "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere

Not exactly. You would continue to claim UC which would include the housing element. You can’t choose which bits of UC you claim, you get paid the bits you are entitled to. However, to get help with the rent you remain on UC. If you Income is low you will get more than just the housing element.Gaz1971 said: So would I have to remain on UC and just claim the housing component?Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. I'm self employed and have just completed the claim for universal credit but they are asking me to go for an interview on the 2nd May. I thought the deal was we don't have to go for an interview and we get paid sick pay ASAP. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?0

Could this be an interview by telephone?0

DON'T give up your housing benefit claim if there is ANY way you can avoid it!!! Even if it means spending your savings or selling things to get through this period.

All face to face appointments are suspended for at least months. They will eventually ring you but when this will be i don't know, there's been 100's of thousands UC claims in the last couple of weeks. You'll just have to wait until they ring you.
