Really?452 said:2mm across 75% of the tyre and bald on both edges is legal.
I had two tyres replace today (only 9 months old) to get my car through its MOT (retest).
FAIL - Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects)- Tyre has ply or cords exposed Off Side Front

I've never had an issue with Tyresonthedrive in the few years I have used them, convenience of having them done at work. They are good price wise also.0

I suspect the standard of work varies with the individual operators.
I had ATS mobile out a few years ago for a company car and the guy fitted the wrong rated tyres, a bright yellow valve cap and scratched the alloys. He also never bothered balancing the wheels despite it being listed on the invoice.
A couple of months ago I had Kwik Fit mobile out because they were cheaper than the others by some margin. I printed off the details, watched him do it and examined the tyres and wheels closely and they were fine.0 -

The graph of 'stopping distances' on page 12 of this RoSPA tyre safety factsheet is well worth a look.
It's quite sobering and really illustrates the need the have decent tread;
...1.6mm is the legal minimum;...however, ’stopping distances' in the wet increase dramatically when the tread goes below 3mm!
