How are garden waste collections more important than peoples lives

  • This is 100% true. I have seen comments on Facebook and calls to my own councils about ‘why are the tips closed! Surely they can wear gloves and we’ll stay far away!’

what part of necessary journey don’t you understand Brenda? You wanting to clear your house and garden out whilst stuck at home to save lives doesn’t mean you can risk lives to not have some tat on your driveway!!
I've commented on some people's posts and they soon remove their post as I think they realized how selfish they sound.   People are still asking the council if the green bin can be emptied and someone posted their christmas tree is in the bin so it needs emptying.

our garden waste was emptied last week but from tomorrow it’s suspended for 6 weeks , there’s a lot of people complaining that they pay for a service they aren’t getting and I have had more than the odd heated discussion about it .

People seem to forget you can actually leave the cut grass on the lawn ! Our mower has a mulching function so that’s what we will be doing and if it’s ok I might not pay for the garden waste bin next year .

It took our Council a week or so between cancelling and revealing what the refund process would be.

(We have one brown bin emptied free of charge, a second brown bin is available at £50 annually.)

I hope all those that moaned after cancellation were satisfied!

My issue is we can have food waste in ours so I have a lot of chicken and meat remains in the bin that will be starting to stink and I am not going to dig them out from the grass cuttings and various prunings.
I think you should seriously re-think that attitude.
Why have you put such food waste in your garden bin in the first place? :open_mouth:
Remove it now, the health risk isn't going away anytime soon..
In Coventry, we're allowed to put food waste into our garden bin - the city council issued ads about this in the last few months.

Each council decides how it will collect Household Waste.

Food Waste and Garden Waste are both Household Waste.

Councils may require residents not to put Food Waste or Garden Waste in with their general waste.  It is up to each council to decide.

Where garden waste is collected separately, councils are permitted to charge for the collection.  Whether they do or not is a matter for each council. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2012/811/schedule/1/made

There is a general statutory duty on councils to collect Household Waste.  http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1990/43/section/45

Where I live, the council has stopped collecting Garden Waste because of staff shortages.
It makes sense to prioritise the type of collections that councils to continue to operate.  If staff shortages get worse, some councils might suspend recycling collections.  Food Waste, if collected separately, should be the top priority.

In my experience, collection staff are often interchangeable between the different types of collection.

If you have storage space, squash your dry recycling and stockpile it until collections resume or recycling centres reopen.  Aluminium cans squash very easily.  To squash a steel can, use a can opener to take off the bottom after you've rinsed the can.  It will then squash easily.  Be careful not to cut yourself!  Squash plastic bottles.  Your dry recycling should be cleas, so it will not be a health hazard if you have the space to store it for a few weeks.

Compost your food waste at home if you can (but not meat).  Even if you have a food waste collection, if you can reduce the amount of food waste you are presenting it will help the council as the vehicle will not need to be emptied so frequently.  The staff will be able to carry out more collections.

I've just emptied my compost bin completely ready for this year's garden waste.  I'm hoping that by trimming the grass more often and having short cuttings, it will compost more quickly.  If necessary, you can leave short clippings on the lawn.

I don't think any Council has stopped collecting Recycling waste, only the garden waste collections have been suspended.
You do give solid  advice about how to deal with that if recycling is also suspended at some point.

Aluminium cans should NOT be squashed as you advise, however. (EDIT: unless your local Council allows it).

Of far more concern is the poster who said his garden waste would now be in with his household waste. Poster  "scd3scd4" is acting very irresponsibly given the current situation and shortage of staff.

Household waste should be  the only type given   priority as it presents a potential hazard to health if not collected and disposed of promptly.

All other waste is secondary with garden waste very low priority...

Care to explain why you think we shouldn't be squashing aluminium cans?

My local  Council is very specific about this when listing what is acceptable in the recycle bin; "Cans (do not crush)".  I expect this is to do with the way these are sorted at the recycling centre..
To be fair, I don't know if other Councils specify this so best to check...
