people who have tried to offer succint advice on this topic have either misinformed people or confused them. I have merely been trying to give people the facts and save them money. It is not a subject that can be addressed in a one liner !Aylesbury_Duck said:

People should be mindful that a balance is required. There is no merit in sending these companies bankrupt - so if they offer to rebook you then that seems like a sensible outcome. Everyone needs to wear a bit of pain if we are going to get through this crisis - so being unreasonable and expecting all of your money back when you are being offered a reasonable alternative is in my opinion not really on.3

If I had a booking that cost £500 (paid in full) I can choose 10% back if I cancel (I lose £450) or pay the new booking cost of £1000 and lose £500.SmashedAvacado said:People should be mindful that a balance is required. You think that’s reasonable?0 -
you actually lose your holiday. The money has already been spent. You're not losing any money
but here's the thing - they are not really doubling their prices; you are looking at a different holiday. If you choose a comparable week / weekend you will get what you paid for. It might be slightly less convenient for you - but this way you win and the company wins. The company doesn't have to fire people, close down, cause its landlords to close down, cause its cleaners and staff to lose their jobs. All for the inconvenience of having what you have paid for at a time slightly less convenient for you than you had originally planned.1 -
What I see is the company gets paid double. I have no dates off work which match when the property is now available. It’s called profiteering from a pandemic.SmashedAvacado said:you actually lose your holiday. The money has already been spent. You're not losing any money

According to Virgin (my credit card) on Twitter, they can't help with a s.75 claim if a company has a no cancellation policy. I presume they are too dim to realise that the company have cancelled, not me!
To anyone saying the money isn't lost, it is. If I can't reschedule I won't have the money or the holiday, how is that fair? By all accounts Sykes have the money from the cottage owners and are hanging on to it. I hope Sykes get a lot of bad publicity out of this and people think twice about using them in the future as they are screwing over the owners and the customers.

I am just not buying the people saying that there is no possible other time that they could take a holiday in the next year. I know you would rather have your money back, but taking a bit of a compromise is presumably fair enough given many people will lose their jobs, livelihoods and a lot lot more from all of this1

How is paying double a compromise? If you can only book during school holidays, you had a booking for this Easter break, and the cottage company offers mid December before school breaks up, at twice the price, as the only alternative, you haven’t really got an option have you?SmashedAvacado said:I am just not buying the people saying that there is no possible other time that they could take a holiday in the next year. Exactly this, as I've mentioned before.SmashedAvacado said:I am just not buying the people saying that there is no possible other time that they could take a holiday in the next year. This is unprecedented, if everyone demands a refund then half the companies out there will go bust. Give and take, have a holiday next year and sleep well knowing you've helped people stay in jobs and another company survive.1
