The alcohol ones do (for enveloped viruses like the coronavirus at least, I haven't personally looked into whether it's effective for other types) - the alcohol basically disrupts the lipid membrane and dismantles it so it's no longer a functioning virus capable of doing anything. This is the same mechanism by which soap/detergent dismantles the virus.

I bet that not all supermarkets etc - who offer hand cleansing on entering and leaving the stores are aware of the difference between viruses and bacteria and do not use alcohol based cleaner ?

If this is the case - they are just paying LIP SERVICE to the problem

Considering it's been so widely publicised that the alcohol content has to be at least 60%, and it took them long enough to implement the sanitising, I have no doubt they're using the right stuff. It's when you get alternative, 'more natural' alcohol-free santiser that you have to worry. Commercially, alcohol-based sanitiser has always been used by default - which is why alternatives sprang up, to be gentler on the skin (and the ingredients for those are generally more expensive so you can be sure they won't have opted for them!).

Don't believe this for an instant - I have seen the bottle of stuff used at two local (national chain) supermarkets and can confirm they meet, by a long way, the required alcohol levels.  The managers of such places are really not stupid to even consider 'paying lip service'.  The mind boggles at the suggestion.

If you're concerned just ask to see the bottle!

I purchased 2 x 250ml 64% alcohol base moisturizing hand gel from a welknown online and brochure not mentioning names but Ding dong A....calling for £3.50 each - thought I could use it to refill the small bottle
