Anti BACTERIAL does nothing for Viruses
Plus dishwashing liquid is usually too harsh for skin. In a pinch it will do exactly the same job of dismantling the virus; I'm never quite sure what the  enefit of antibacterial handwash etc. is because if you wash your hands thoroughly anyway all the bacteria have been dislodged and washed away. I guess for lazy washers maybe it's helpful (in general, not for viruses)?

Regardless, any kind of liquid soap doesn't help if you can't actually wash your hands, which is the entire point of sanitiser!

Yes, but people are using sanitiser when they COULD wash their hands. They are reaching for the bottle in their pockets instead.

We have nurses come to our house.  They do what they need to do  (one job is to change mums catheter) and for years now, they just use hand sanitiser when they are done.
No nurse has washed their hands here for years and opts to use sanitiser instead.

People are relying on it far too much, and what happens then is the sanitiser starts to strip away the natural protection of skin, causes bugs to grow stronger, and creates a false sense of security.

It does more harm than good in the long run.

Yep, fair enough - and I agree it can be harmful in the long run. That just didn't seem to be the point of the discussion at the time :)

Nurses don't wash hands in people's houses because they can recontaminate their hands turning the tap off and they can contaminate their hands using a towel of unknown cleanliness. Taps in hospitals and surgeries are designed so they can be turned off with arms or elbows so hands stay clean.

Hand cream.  Aldi do a Lacura one for 79p which is gorgeous.  I may have ran out of hand sanitiser but I had stashes of hand cream from a year ago, so no issue for me there.

Hope you are all keeping well.  Enjoy your weekend and #staysafe

This is an extremely important question :
Does Anti Bacterial Gel - actually kill Viruses or not ?
Because Viruses are NOT bacteria !

The alcohol ones do (for enveloped viruses like the coronavirus at least, I haven't personally looked into whether it's effective for other types) - the alcohol basically disrupts the lipid membrane and dismantles it so it's no longer a functioning virus capable of doing anything. This is the same mechanism by which soap/detergent dismantles the virus.
