I just downloaded, from the playstore, Safetynet test and ran it on my Fire 8.

It failed on the CTS test mentioned in that link above so try that and there could be you answer. If so forget trying to use the Barclays banking app!!

My Fire 7 fails that same test ... you generally need green across the board for banking apps to work.

I have a Fire HD 8 and I certainly wouldn't by another one (or any other Fire tablet) unless Amazon either vastly expand their App store and / or remove many of the restrictions. I was incredibly disappointed to find how limited the Amazon App store was. I subscribe to MS Office 365 but couldn't even download that from Amazon! Several of the popular catch up TV apps are missing too. OK, their Silk browser isn't bad but I suspect most people would like something more familiar

I am reasonably tech savvy and I have "sideloaded" the Google Play store etc, so I have been able to get most of the Apps I want. However I have still run into one or two issues similar to the problems the OP has been having. 

Not vital I know but I hate the interface / launcher but you can't easily (or at all) install any other. Google Now used to be possible with quite bit of effort but not now.

I did manage to get rid of the lock screen adverts though!

What method did you use to make that work permanently? (I did it, but when the Fire 7 was turned off then back on the adverts came back).

PS - I use Chrome on my Fire 7.
