Probably the biggest clue is whether the app is available from the Amazon app store ... if it isn't then it's probably not the best device to try to use for banking apps.

But Head the advice claims they did it

Hi, I did not load and used the banking app. If I inadvertantly gave you that impression I apologise.
I have a Fire 8hd - was not aware you have a Fire 7 - but nevertheless the instruction are to make the Fire OS compatible with the wider Android apps and downloading/installing apps from that store.
It could be that the Barclays app detects the fundamental device or op system and rejects it. I have no idea sorry!

....and can I add I do have (like ma y others) apps from the Playstore running on Fire such as Google Translate.
Have you tried, Aardvaak, downloading another app from the Playstore to see if there is more basic Apk problem?

Noted from the link provided on page 1.
"The app will not work on rooted devices. "  Is a tablet with the APKs added considered rooted? I would guess this is a security reason.

Full info copied here, (have you read it?) some one might be able to advise but possibly the best short answer was get a full Android device if it cannot be sorted.
    " The Barclays app

    HOW TO REGISTER
If you’re 16 or over and you have a UK-registered mobile number and a Barclays current account or Barclaycard, you can register for the app. You’ll need the 16 digit number off your card, then follow the onscreen instructions. Some customers may be required to verify their identity with PINsentry or at a Barclays cash machine.

If you’ve got an activation code, follow the onscreen steps to register (you won’t need PINsentry for this).

After you’re set up, you’ll only need your 5-digit passcode to log in. Then you can set up Android Fingerprint to log in faster in future.

This app doesn’t work on rooted devices.

    THE BENEFITS
•Log in quickly and securely when you set up access through Android Fingerprint
•Manage your personal and business accounts, and view your Barclays mortgage account, as well as managing your personal Barclaycard accounts
•See recent transactions and check your balances
    •Transfer funds between accounts
•Make payments to people you’ve paid before and people in your payee list
•Upload, sort and store your important documents securely with Barclays Cloud It. Just use your camera to take photos of documents you want to store
•Find your nearest branch or cash machine
•Log into Online Banking more easily using Mobile PINsentry. So we can complete some security checks, it can take up to 4 days for Mobile PINsentry to be activated in the app
•Call our customer services team direct from the app to speak to an advisor
•Manage your Barclays personal and business accounts with 1 secure log-in
•No need to log in to lots of apps - view your current accounts held with other banks, safely and securely, in your app

Terms and conditions apply. You must be aged 16 or over to use the Barclays app. "

it is common for playstore apps to say they might not be optimised for your device but all I have tried work well.......except some at present that I am trying to use for voice to text!!!

    BOS app has similar instructions/restriction.
Your device needs to be registered (see note on download page on playstore), done that?
Plus needs Android OS 5.0 or later. Maybe you OS is not new enough or the app notes it is a Fire OS.
I do not know the answers to any of these posers!! but maybe they will help you make progress if you don't  put your hand in your pocket!

FireOS 5 (on the Fire 7 2017) is akin to Android 5.1 (Lollipop) API level 22. (That's the version I have, and Google Play store works fine on it). The Fire 7 2019 version is akin to Android 7.1 (Nougat) API level 25.

    https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tablets/ft-specs-custom.html

As per my previous post, banking apps are unlikely to work on Fire tablets (unless available via the Amazon app store) because the tablet fails the SafetyNet test.

It was the 5.1 APK's I was using but it did say it was not tested

You again miss the point, Aardvaak!
You will probably have fully functioning Playstore (I did ask if anything else from there can be loaded and run!) It is basically just a repository of programs.

The issue is likely that Barclays have set necessary severe tests in THEIR app to ensufe security -as mentiined by  Doam above.
I do not know how that safetynet test works so cannot advise on that.
You really must not mix up getting access to Googles Playstore........and the limitations imposed by Barclays for security.

But if you nedd mofe info - it was not difficult to find with a search read https://www.howtogeek.com/241012/safetynet-explained-why-android-pay-and-other-apps-dont-work-on-rooted-devices/
Not sure which methox you used to get access to the Playstore (rooted or not rooted method) but that website explains what the limitations are and why.
