Another question on forthcoming holiday and current Corona Virus situation - sorry!

So, we are booked to travel to Florida mid May 2020.  Flights, car hire and motels all booked through same company.  Final balance is on credit card and due to go out of our account in a few days.  I guess what I am looking for advice on is;
  • Although we don't 100% know it, chances are the airline (Virgin, although holiday not booked through them) will be unable to fly us so we will by default not be able to take our holiday (not that we want to in the current situation).  My understanding is if travel restrictions are still in place at that time we should be refunded the cost of airline travel only and hope we can sort out the rest through our travel insurance.  What happens however if the airline goes bust?
  • Another option is we postpone, so we can rebook in say May 2021 and use the monies already paid for that. This will incur admin charges and possible further costs where travel and accommodation prices may change, The travel company has suggested this is an option.  Again would ABTA cover us if the travel company, airline or both go bust given we have moved the dates? We have an ABTA certificate.
  • Can I ask the credit card company to not pay the balance of the holiday so we get the money still to be paid back, although we would have lost the balance paid some time ago?  The chances are the holiday cannot happen although we don't know that for sure yet.
We do have travel insurance taken out early January 2020 so if all else fails we will have the option of making a claim on that policy.  I fully understand nobody here can advise on the travel insurance and when or if the time comes we will need to speak to the insurer.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.  We saved for this for so long!

  • Sorry, I did not pick up the specific forum to post on this but did read the advice page.  I will look at the posts on the forum.

    I think what may also be confusing me is if FCO advice will be not to travel to USA which I think is not the case right now but USA have suspended incoming flights from the UK what would our position be?  Possibility that we cannot get to the destination but the FCO may not be saying we should not travel.

    It might be worth reading the FCO travel advisories.

    The one issued today advising against all non essential travel is for 30 days and runs until 16 April. It could ultimately be extended (who knows) but it does not therefore cover your holiday trip in mid-May.
