Seriously, do you not get the contradiction in your post? Shopkeepers, binmen, electricians and plumbers are EXACTLY the locals who can't afford to buy and according to your logic should move away. THEN who'll work in the shops, clear the rubbish, etc etc. that was squatnow's point.

    :T

    Totally agree.

    northernsal's comments are clearly ridiculous.

    Hi there,

My parents are basically sick of manchester but both work in the city.

They would LOVE to buy a second home somewhere on the South coast, preferably Dorset or Devon.

However, they only have £180,000 to spend and there's just nothing in their price range apart from flats.

They don't want a leasehold and I think are looking forward to their retirement in 15 years time when they could move there down permanently.

Does anyone know of any up and coming areas on the South coast where the property would be cheaper, also with the house prices possible falling does anyone predict that this will apply to the South coast because I don't think London house prices will ever drop and as the South is pretty desirable,,maybe the same could be applied there?????

What about Harry Rednapps place in Poole ? He might be going off for a stay in HMP Portland :D

I can appreciate your point, but I do really feel that if for e.g that binman really wanted to buy in their town but obviously couldn't because of the difference in their salary and the house prices that binman would have to

    a) get another job and re-train and change career

    b) try and get promoted within his present role

    c) rent an empty property in their town and do another job and save, till they can afford to buy.

Yes..of course there's going to be the point who will replace the binman then, someone who doesn't want to own their own home/isn't bothered to have a property we could go on all day.

The point has digressed but second home owners are always, always attacked and people have choices to make in life about what they have to achieve.

If the majority are saying that people shouldn't have a second home what are people like my parents expected to do. They are hardly wanting to buy a property portfolio, just planning for their retirement and a quality of life they want to achieve.

You're not very bright, are you? The binman isn't a person, it's a role. The person who empties the bin, WHOEVER he is, HAS TO LIVE SOMEWHERE.

The shopkeeper is a ROLE. Somebody has to run the shop.

Somebody has to stack the SHELVES in the shop. Someone has to read the electrical meter in the shop.

I love the term "key workers".... oh it's just policemen. And firemen. And nurses. And the mechanice who maintain the police cars. And the people who put food on the shelves so policemen can eat.

Pretty much every role in society is a key role apart from:
    > Politicians
    > Pensioners
    > Property Investors

Society exists and functions because millions of people do millions of different jobs. They all have to live somewhere. If muppets buy up lots of houses they don't need and push up prices so that some of those million of key workers can't afford to work, society collapses.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

    No there isn't is there????

If you're looking along the South Coast, concentrate on the outer lying areas of the main towns, eg Southampton & Bournemouth - think Christchurch, New Milton etc....

If their budget can be stretched to around £230k, I have a property right in the heart of the New Forest, less than five minutes walk from the open forest where the animals run freely...

Looking to sell early part of next year - ideal spot for sailing, walking and shopping - plus London is an hour and a half away by train to Waterloo.

You can't have done that badly then??

To be honest SquatNow, that has been going on down here for the last 15 years. I can't afford to live in the village I grew up in due to house prices being raised during the 90's by 2nd homeowners.

The trouble now, is that the prices are over and above what anyone on a normal wage can afford. I count myself lucky as I earn more than the average national wage but haven't got a hope.

Unfortunately for local people not earning 50k plus, the only hope is Social Housing....and if you have any half a decent wage and don't qualify for a council housing list you have got no hope.....yep stuck in the middle me!!

Don't earn enough to buy there and earn too much to stand a chance on a council list....

As you can tell, I'm not bitter......

But you've got a £230,000 county pad that you want to flog...where's your village that you can't afford to buy in...Knightsbridge?????

Well, hopefully one day can be as bright as you.

If they don't want to move, RENT, DO A SECOND JOB AND SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no one's saying the binman should be a squatter...heaven forbid:rotfl:

Most 2nd homeowners are attacked because the majority do not contribute anything to the areas they move to - to many, its a nice bolthole at weekends and left empty the rest of the week.

And because they're not there during the week, when they are down they don't communicate with the people around them. Which in turn creates the 'them and us' scenario which this thread is now based around.

I honestly wish your parents well, and to achieve that amount of savings is commendable to say the least.:T My point earlier was that for a large slice of society being able to live in the environment of your ancestors is now a distant dream...I'm sure that you would feel the same.

Too many in this area of the country fly down in their Porsche Cayennes on a Friday evening and whizz back on Sundays...to their high powered jobs in the City which have funded their 2nd homes.

To them, it may be ideal to chat with friends over some Bolli about their pad in the country, but its turning beautiful areas of the country into the playgrounds of the rich.
