Yes, when buying a 2.5 year old car from a main dealer once I got them to put a years MOT on it. Mainly to save me the hassle of taking it back for an MOT six months later.
Are you sure they post date it, I was told they could'nt.
An MOT lasts for a year. You must have a valid MOT when the vehicle turns 3 year old. You can have that MOT done at 2.1 years, or 2.9 years. You then need to do your second MOT when the vehicle is 3.x years old so the above poster will go back for second MOT when vehicle reaches 3.5 years old.

They post-date the expiry if it's within one month of the test.

So take it in on 1st March, when the expiry is 31st March - expiry is 31st March.
Take it in on 1st March, when the expiry is 1st April - expiry is 1st March.

No, they didn't post-date it, it ran for a year from the date they did it.

I was quite happy with that in any case as it meant the MOT anniversary fell in June every year rather than December. In the days when I used to work on my own cars (usually outdoors) I hated dealing with MOTs in winter weather, so every car I owned I would always first MOT in May, June, July or August so I'd never end up with a future MOT expiry date falling in cold weather!
