Iberia express cancellation

Options
We booked flights with iberia Express to Madrid for July. Then yesterday we got an email saying our flights had been cancelled. When we initially rang up about this the woman had no idea and said the email had been sent in error and the flight was still running. However I think later received a refund receipt for 1 of the flights, so I rung up to be told a different story, that the flight was cancelled because they didnt "run that route anymore". I questioned how it was fair that they could sell tickets to a flight when they were cancelling the route and he responded "you booked them in December, we've cancelled the route, you will get your refund". I said this wasnt good enough as we had got hotels booked and festival tickets for him to hang up the phone on me!!
I then rang back again later and me and my friends got our flights changed to a different airport. However this one ticket in which the refund receipt got sent out could not be changed and when I asked if anything could be done as it would cost me much more to rebook it the man seemed clueless.
They gave me less than an hour between the email saying the flight had been cancelled and this refund receipt so I had no time to organise anything! We booked these flights early while they were cheap so to rebook them now to the flight he changed the other ones to would cost an extra £300, which we can not afford!
Is there anything we can do to appeal this or get any form of compensation? I think this is appalling service that they can sell a whole flight just to cancel it, and then every member of staff I speak to tell me something completely different!

I am also going to claim ‘clueless’ to that point as well.  At least for my benefit,  please could you clarify what you mean.

As more than 14 days notice has been given you are entitled to a refund or a rerouting.  From what I can understand they have given you the rerouting you requested.

The airline is not liable for any compensation (from what I can work out of your situation).
