  • No?
  • Can anyone help me with the calculation. Really confused.
The CMS website calculator states -

What is your total taxable income?

This is your total income from employment or self-employment, before tax and National Insurance, but after pension contributions. This can be weekly, monthly or yearly.
  • Gross Wage£24,970£2,081£480
    National Insurance£1,961£163£38
    Pension£1,249£104£24
    Pension HMRC£312£26£6
    Student Loan£0£0£0
    Take Home Pay£19,518£1,627£375
    Tax Free Allowance£12,509£1,042£241
    Tax Paid£2,243£187£43
    Taxable Wage£11,213£934£216
  • This number will be on your last P60.
It's just your gross salary with your workplace pension taken off. So basically the total number that they are allowed to tax you on.

What was your gross pay last year? - A
How much of that went straight into pension? - B
A minus B is your Total Taxable Income

If your pay is the same every month you can just look at your last payslip and use the monthly figure.
  • What confuses me is that is says total taxable. And that is after pension contribution BUT before tax & NI
    £24,970 (Gross salary per year)
£12,500 (tax free deduction) - 1250L tax code
    £1,248 (Yearly pension deduction)
= £11,222 taxable income.(Input this figure in to CMS calculator?)

I see how you are getting confused. You don't take your tax free allowance into account at all for this calculation. The calculation is as follows:

    24,970 (gross salary) minus 1,248 (pension)= 23,722

So, on those numbers, if you have two children who don't stay over with you (and you have no further children living with you) you should be paying £315 per month.
  • The wording isn't great on the website. I have 3 children and they stay between 1-2 nights per week on average.
  • How did you work out £315?
  • How did you work out £315?
I put your numbers through the child maintenance calculator, but I assumed 2 children and I assumed they didn't stay with you, so my example was not accurate for you.

Going back through the calculator, but putting in 3 children who stay with you 1/2 nights a week then it comes out with £320. Which is what you said you are paying. So that's fine.  :)
  • I really appreciate your help. Would you agree it's confusing when it say's taxable income? Or am I just being an idiot....
