I did not read any manual. I can find no evidence they store heat at all my friend.
The manufacturer's specification?  If it's just a 3kW fan heater, why does it weigh 169kg?
  • They do indeed. A 3kW element for 7 hours on E7 is what it is a 3kW fan assisted convector heater in the UK  it switches off @ 7am. But it's on overnight when we are all tucked up in a high tog duvet and don't need them but they are indeed designed for 24 hour operations. Off @ 0700 the other 17 hours in the UK will be 3kw fan assisted convector heater @ core expensive far rate. I'm sure that they store nothing because the ASA catch all these claims and adjudicate - read them. The will release exactly at the rate they heat enough to release, example 10.minutes in 10 minutes all our, that's science. In the past they've had many claims such as special clay special oil etc.

UK stores 21 and releases 21 @ 2+ per hour after its switched off, that is storage. my views of course, yours might vary nice Englishman.

C'mon chaps - why argue - it is a storage heater, it is filled with bricks, it weighs as much as a storage heater and it has a charge controller (you just have to read the handbook). It's designed to store heat overnight and dissipate it during the day both by radiation/convection and fan assistance. Some variants are fitted with a boost heater as well so it's similar to the Dimplex Quantum

However the SHS variant looks as though it's designed for an eight hour charge which isn't ideal for an E7 supply because you'll get an extra hour at peak rate. The handbook seems to cover three variants of the same heater and it's not obvious which features and functions are relevant to each variant.

Has the OP looked at this info from the handbook (look at my previous post to download it) to enter the configuration part of the menu which is normally inaccessible to the user.

To access the configuration menu, press and hold "Menu".
After approx. 3 seconds, actual value I1 is displayed. Enabling actual values and parameters in access level A1 f
Use "+" or "-" to call up the "CodE" menu item. Access level A0 is displayed, alternating with the menu item. f Press "OK".
The code entry field is displayed. The first digit flashes. f Use "+" or "-" to enter the code 1 0 0 0. After entering each digit, press "OK".
Once the code has been entered correctly, actual values and parameters that were previously inaccessible become visible.

But did you first set Parameter 15, i.e. so that the charging is clock controlled?  Parameters 19 & 20 are probably hidden unless Parameter 15 = 3.

Some of this stuff is getting more and more complex and it does require the electrician to need a bit more skill than just wiring. As Gerry says, some nested parameters may not become available or even visible unless the higher level parameter has been set correctly.
My heat pump controller is similar, it's a single screen but with lots of nested menu's, some of which are pretty obscure and aren't available unless previously enabled. It's a bit like driving the Starship Enterprise, you've got to have a fair idea of how it all works and what they all mean and do - the manual is as complex as the ES one

  • The user/installer interface does seem pretty awful.
Given how slick things like smartphones are I'm sure storage heater manufacturers could do better.

It sounds a bit like European left hand drive vehicles that haven't been fully converted to RHD.  There are many examples of these, e.g. cars where the wipers and handbrake are effectively on the passenger side in the UK, van rear doors that block access to the pavement, radios missing long wave etc.
However, if these storage heaters were designed for 220V, then the UK's 240V will more than offset the reduced charge time from 8 to 7 hours !
  • My whole input over the decade on German 'snake oil heater' use in UK domestic environment has been about their unsuitability for UK TOU:

    - insulation standards
    - 24/24 operation
    - zero storage/release
    - convector camouflaged as NSH

Our standard with three 3kW elements will heat home 7 hours overnight then continue to heat home at two kW for the 17 hours they are switched off. Ours are designed/specified for UK TOU tariffs. Euro/German are designed/specified for totally different TOU/insulation standards. They are not suitable for UK domestic heating.

This thread like all (see Fischer/wiebo etal) threads over the decade are free opinion forum debate not 'argument'. Please feel free continue to post opinions/debate in a polite MSE way.

You can't compare Fischer panel heaters running on expensive daytime electricity with Stiebel Eltron storage heaters on E7.  Their only serious drawback appears to be the inability to work with split E7 night rate hours if the internal clock is used.
    Please stop trolling.

Even though the OP states that they have read the manual 100 times, I still think that this a simple case of RTFM and operator error.

I do not believe that the OP has a "different model" that lacks the ability to program charge times.

The OP has said nothing about what settings they have programmed in the configuration menu for timer settings e.g. Pro1 etc?

"To use timer mode, select the required time program in
the standard menu (see chapter "Settings with integral
room temperature controller / Standard menu")."

"Ensure the day of the week and the time are set correctly
    when setting the time programs.
    "

OP should read pages 8,9 as my guess is still operator error.
