99% of the time you dont need a card reader, I use "memorable data"
You won't be using memorable date for much longer as they're doing away with it and replacing it with codes sent to your mobile.  It's already changed for me.

I agree the card reader requirement when using the mobile app is a major pain. I'm seriously considering switching away from them if they don't change their systems.

I have no problem using it when setting up a new payee. On the rare occasions I think I may need to set up a new payee while I'm away I do carry the card reader with me.

The problem is that I'm regularly asked to use the card reader when trying to pay an existing payee on their app. It has caused me major issues in the past, being completely unable to make any payments until I return home days later. Even their telephone customer services can't override to process the payment without the card reader.

I do not agree that I should be expected to carry the physical card and the card reader around at all times. If anything that is a greater security risk.

I've tried raising complaints about these issues, but they are dismissive and just keep referring me to clause 4.1 of their app T&C:
"4.1 Certain functions and types of transactions available within the Banking App may require you to use the Card Reader"

However this seems at odds with https://www.nationwide.co.uk/support/card-reader/no-card-reader which states
"Without a card reader, you can still:
    • log into the Internet Bank or Banking app
    • view your accounts
    • transfer money between your accounts
    • send money to someone you've paid before."

I don't see why they can't send me a code by text message if they need to confirm a transaction on the mobile app  :|

Sending a code to your mobile sounds like a great idea.  Well it does until you realise that your mobile gets a signal less than 50% of the day, then it's a disaster!
  • It would be nice if the Nationwide app allowed you to confirm using your fingerprint (like FD does) as an alternative to card reader.

I don't use a card reader to login into my Marks and Spencers savings.
Applied for an account at Yorkshire bank/Virgin Money and they send a text to your phone.
