I think the OP is going to be really limited to the banks that don't use card readers / tokens, and only use phone / text confirmation, so as far as I'm aware that would include....
Lloyds
Halifax
Bank Of Scotland
Santander
TSB
Tesco
Co-Operative
....there are probably more, but these are the banks that I have personal experience of and know they don't use card readers etc.
Certainly avoid the ones below as they DO need card readers / tokens...
HSBC
First Direct
Marks & Spencer
Barclays
Nationwide
Natwest / RBS certainly used to use card readers, but that might have changed as it's a while since I had any accounts with them.0 -
The Nationwide app is serving you really well until you want to set up a new payee. For reasons only known to Nationwide, you still need a card reader to do that.Nebulous2 said:Do you use a smartphone?
I do a lot of my banking with Nationwide using the app on my phone. I can't remember the last time I used a card reader.1 -
HSBC, FD and M&S have added a digital secure key which you can use instead of the hideous gadget that you needed before.hgt said:Certainly avoid the ones below as they DO need card readers / tokens...

Starling and Monzo, being app-only banks, only need a smartphone / tablet.
App-only banking has its own perils. You could be left with no access if you can't use your phone for whatever reason (damage, theft etc). I usually use my iPhone but have all the apps on my iPad, too, as a backup. For belts and braces, I have browser access (except for Starling who are not yet offering it; and Monzo who seem to have no plans) and/or telephone banking for the critical banks.0 -
I had a bit of trouble with the HSBC app and it appeared that you could not register the digital secure key on more than one mobile device. I have not experimented as I am happy to have it active on my iPad only.colsten said:HSBC, FD and M&S have added a digital secure key which you can use instead of the hideous gadget that you needed before.

Do you have a digital secure key active on both smartphone and iPad for the HSBC app and is it the same for First Direct?
PS: Hideous gadget? Someone at First Direct got a tiny key ring in a Christmas cracker and had a light bulb moment. He could add a key pad and send it to all his customers as both a 2FA and advertising device.
Genius!

HSBC doesn't work on more than one device but you can activate the digital secure key on a different device if needed. Not sure about FD right now as I haven't got it activated on my iPad and I don't have my login info to hand atm. But I think it works like M&S, who support more than 1 device.RG2015 said:

Thanks. I guess having done it once on both my iPad and smartphone that I could do it again if required. I just recall it being a complete pain when I first tried to install it on one when it was already installed on the other.colsten said:

I wonder how often you need to add a new payee when away from home?1

Even when home using a card reader is just a pain in my opinion... Hate using those things.etienneg said:I wonder how often you need to add a new payee when away from home?
HSBC is the worst for it when using the website along with their terrible app where you have to enter the numbers (which the website doesn't even spell out for you, so you have to 'figure it out').0 -
FD only allow secure key on one device1

99% of the time you dont need a card reader, I use "memorable data"0
