Turn the gas off at the meter rather than at the appliances, in case you have a leak.
Surround the meter with freezer gel blocks if the 'b' symbol disappears or is hard to photograph.
What's the meter make and model number?

Turned gas meter off at mains months ago the meter still increased. I had a gas network company out to test for leaks ages ago, no leaks.

Make Landis Gyr 310p.  My pics are fine it just seems Bulb are being awkward I think.  Good idea about ice blocks.

This is the Picture I have sent today(taken when the b was visible).

The Libra 310p is notorious for this.  Probably time to get the meter tested.  See how Matthaus73 did this - and won !

Just had call from Bulb. Getting meter test 15th Sept. Hope it goes in my favour, or they will have a fight on their hands.

The meter test will involve them removing your old meter, and replacing it, while the old one is sent away for testing.  Interestingly, the calibration tests aren't carried out over a range of temperatures, in order to mimic actual operational conditions, but are done at standard temp and pressure (20 degC, one atmosphere).  Something that functions fine in ideal conditions isn't necessarily going to function properly in the deep of winter - this is a question for Ofgem or whoever oversees/sets the calibration/testing criteria, but it was an interesting little fact, I thought.  We got our results about 8 weeks after they removed the meter.

  • My L and G G470 gas meter account went ‘rogue’ on the 12th. Over 12000kWhs of consumption were added to my online account at a cost of over £240. My previous bill was just 10 days earlier. The reason for the fault was quickly identified and rectified. Meter readers are deemed to be smarter than the smart meters that they read; I have no idea which meter the meter reader looked at but it wasn’t mine as my total SMETS2 consumption has yet to reach 12000kWhs. For some unfathomable reason, suppliers accept actual meter readings from a meter reader as a given even though, in my case, the supplier has a year’s worth of recorded 30 minute usage to fall back on. My £240 charge was reduced to £4.04.

This is what concerns me really. It seems to be behaving itself at the moment because the weather is warmer. I have lots of readings taken when it was erratic(up to 100 units some days) plus I have a Nest thermostat which is recording how long the heating was on daily.

I will need to wait and see. It might be one for ofgem.

The meter I have was installed by British Gas. It is not compatible with Bulb's system at the moment. I was giving them readings online every month.

The only record available on daily use is what I have been doing myself, pics twice daily and screen shots of my Nest usage.

That can happen to anyone with any meter smart or not, so not really relevant to this thread.
In this case having the smart meter is actually a positive thing as it makes it trivial to prove that the meter reader was in error.

    Update:
Just had a call from Bulb. They have now decided they are not going to test my meter on 15th Sept. They are agreeing it is faulty & are doing an exchange on that date (only thing it is like for like 1st gen smart meter). They will estimate my bills from Dec 2019. Maybe the best outcome I could get.

  • Update:
My gas meter was changed on 15th Sept. Only thing was it was changed to a Landis Gyr 130, no smart functions.

Regarding the readings since Oct 2019 until now( when I think fault developed). Bulb estimated my usage & to be honest it has come out better than I expected. It was about £80 difference in my favour. I am quite pleased with the outcome & glad it never dragged out. Can only say Bulb were very helpful in this matter & It saved me going to the ombudsman with all the stress that goes with it.

New meter working fine I have only used 7 units since installation.
