I'd be interested from any forumites / MSE itself if this is true.
The grammar police are still here
.... Im.not keen on the ubiquitous 'Forumite' label.
Have a day off badger.
It was intended as a lighthearted, humorous contribution, as evidenced by the emoji, and was immediately followed by 'Apologies veryintrigued' which, for some reason, you chose to omit from your quote. However, I will as you suggest, take a day off. Or rather, I will refrain from any further response to your posts.4 -

Failing to do this and dropping your comments within the quoted post makes it harder for others to respond. That limits the complexity of discussions that can be had here. All of the above is somewhat offputting. I don't personally have any problem with the general look and feel of the forum.0

So, the answer to 'how hard would it be?' is 'well, more than just pressing a button...' and the developers are busy with other priorities on this forum that you pay nothing to use.
As I mentioned up the thread, an MSE representative has already posted on the Snagging thread on the forum feedback board, to say that among other things, adding post numbers is one of the things they are looking at. Don't shoot the messenger for telling you that or giving you a workaround.

Getting back to topic, agree it seems a lot less busy on the forums. I'm visiting less myself as I'm not finding the new system easy to use - so many familiar and useful features have (senselessly!) gone - hovering to see content, post numbers, unable to get subscriptions other than for every post etc etc etc (I could go on and on). Many of which seem trivial in themselves, but combined make the forum feel much less welcoming and useful. It's as if no one thought through what people use.
I say this as someone who generally supports and adapts to upgrades - for example I was one of those who used the most up to date formats of the old forum, in contrast (I think) to many old hands who opted for the older skin.
My overall feeling is sadness that MSE don't seem to have thought through how people use the forum - and have omitted many features that were basic. Which is perhaps not surprising as it always seemed to me that MSE staff contributors to the forum were fairly naive in how they contributed and used the forum. But it does strongly suggest any beta testing was completely inadequate - who was involved?
Overall, unless things change rapidly, I think this is a slippery slope to a much less useful forum.2 -
