Thank you for letting us know that your previously deleted messages have re-appeared in your inbox and we’re sorry to hear this is causing you distress. As you’re aware, we recently moved the Forum onto a new platform and what’s happened to you is an unintended consequence of the move. We can assure you this data is secure and has not been breached in any way or made public. Meanwhile, the MSE team is working hard to sort the issue out. We’ll keep you updated with our progress – we really appreciate your patience.
But what they cannot do is ignore a user's request to have their personal data erased. - Data Protection Act 2018.
So all those posters that had asked for their PMs to be deleted are entitled to have expected them to be deleted - as per the DPA 2018.
To find that personal data re-appearing some years later is baffling - to say the least.
We now find that the option is no longer delete but instead leave conversation. Looks like the personal data will hang around on some server or other for many years to come despite the original request that the data be deleted.

They have the right to request their information is deleted. Not the same as deleting it yourself in a forum. I'm sure it would have been permanently deleted had someone requested it under the act.
Regardless of nuanced discussions about requests to delete Vs deleting them yourselves. I would expect any responsible forum or message board to have robust data controls. Clearly MSE does not.
Personally, I'm very disappointed at the lack of planning of this software change and the lack of care shown of data. It's a real eye opener for me.
I too had a lot of old messages return, however they have now been removed, BUT a lot of my saved messages have now disappeared, these were very important to me, where are they please ????
