  • Thanks (johnllew) for the quick response. I thought it was a reasonable account (even though it does not appear in any best buys tables) and wanted confirmation from fellow moneysavers.

I dont have a good credit rating. I have a current account with the cooperative bank. With them I have a debit card and a cheque book. I dont have a credit card and I dont have an overdraft.
All I want is a current account with more branches where I can pay in cheques easier than having to find a coop branch each time.
    My question is:
Is there a bank that will offer me a current account with debit card and cheque book, that will not turn me down because of my credit rating. After all, I dont want credit from them.

    Many thanks
  • Hiya guys and gals,
Im 18. I earn approx £350 a month and am not a student.
Im looking for a current account which gives me a Visa/Maestro something more well-known than solo.
    I also want a small overdraft facility about £50 - £100.

A chequebook with guarantee card would be nice, and also some decentish (not many that good under £1000pm) rates.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Kind Regards
    Chris Lee

    Hi,

This has been a very useful thread!

Does opening/applying for a new account affect your credit rating?

For an interest free overdraft of upto £2000, what account would you recommend?

Just had an account review with LloydsTSB and was absoloutely useless! I seemed to know more about the accounts available than my "account manager". My graduate account is coming to an end in December and they had nothing decent to offer at all. I thought Lloyds were offering an interest free overdraft but "account manager" didn't know what i was referring to

If an overdraft or any form of credit is involved, a search will be registered on your credit file. Too many searches is not considered to be good.

The Alliance & Leicester Premium Plus a/c - 0% overdraft for the first 12 months and 5.5% gross on credit balances.

You don't want much do you?????
#Student account up to 5 years free overdraft!
Graduate terms free o/d (up to £2000?) for 2 further years and now you want another freebie!!
If you have not had a graduate loan try for one of those to clear your o/d and other debts on a rate I think of around 7.9% (unless of course after all this education you are still unemployed)

    Eric,

Considering your comments i assume you were only able to take advantage of basic education.

I do however agree that graduates get a very good deal on accounts. Shame there are not as many deals available now that i AM employed....and paying 40% tax on my earnings  :-*

  • Please can someone advise me.

My husband and i have currently bank with First Direct, and have done so for over 7 years. Over the years they have been very helpful and made us feel like we could rely on them. However in the past couple of months i have asked them for a couple of things (1. A small overdraft, following the xmas period, and 2. to compete with a loan quote we have had) The overdraft was eventually given to us after 40minutes of talking to them and the loan i have just moved from First Direct to Abbey, which FD are not happy with. But Abbey are now saving us £60 a month.

I would like to move banks and beleive that what you say about A&L sounds good. My husband and i put move that £1,000 in the bank each month. Very rarely be we have an overdraft.

However my problem is that our nearest A&L is 26miles away. Of course i can telephone bank and internet bank, but my husband gets paid by cheque each week.

Would A&L be able to do something for me in order to move. Or would another bank be more suitable?

You can alway's either a. Post Cheques (very slow) or b. Pay them in at the post office :)
