  • I would concur with johnllew, that
Smile is the one of, if not, the best and easiest to operate current account :)

I have been with Smile since the end of January and I like their competitive interest rates and their ethical stance.

To date, I have no problems at all with moving my money, or with standing orders or direct debits.

I want to be a good saver, but I find it difficult to control my temptation to spend :o .

    I owe £1,247 more than I have in savings :( .

:)Thanks for the recommendations, this seems to concur with the majority on this board. What about paying in cheques, how is this done ?

You can pay in at a Co-op bank, send the cheques in by post or pay them in using your local post office. I use the post office, it's very efficient: by the time the cheques arrive in my Smile account (usually 3 working days later) they are cleared. The post office gets a small commission for each transaction they handle so I feel I'm doing my bit to support a village business.

Thanks johnllew Sounds good enough for me and as you say it will support the local Post Office. I do not have a co-op bank near me and we have had a couple of local POs close down despite protests etc.
Still I won't worry about that until and if it happens.
I will go with Smile. and get my application in. Cheers to all.

Someone has asked a similar question already but I couldn't see a response. I want to take advantage of the 5% interest rate with A&L. I currently have a LTSB account and can't imagine that they'll offer the same terms to an existing customer. Could the payment of £1000 per month be a transfer i.e could I keep my LTSB account and transfer £1001 pounds into A&L to get the interest rate?? Also I pay an account fee at LTSB for a better account. Will this also be the case at A&L.
    Thanks

IMO Cahoot and A&L Premier a/c are both good.

Have been very pleased with cahoot especially.

    Best wishes

The new A+L account does not have an account fee. They will charge you if you fail to pay in the minimum of £1000 per month, though. Think the fine is £5 per month.

Somebody else suggested transferring funds between current accounts. I suppose this would meet the terms and conditions but I personally don't think it would be worth the hassle.

Darren, reading martins article i`m sure he says the 5% is only on the first £2500 & 0.1% thereafter on A&L premier plus, if your not in it for the overdraft look at the A&L premier current 2.10% £500 mth req pay in, automatically given free worldwide travel ins & linked online saver acc @ 4.50%

Hi. I'm thinking about switching to the A+L account, but I'd like to know what the chances are of them matching my current £4050 overdraft limit with NatWest? I'd be paying in between £1500 and £1800 a month. Also, do they let you know quite quickly?

I have tried to follow Martin's advice about switching and have applied for A&L and then Llloyds TSB accounts as suggested. I have 2.5k on my Natwest o/d and am paying 14.92%!! My credit rating is good (I checked on equifax) but I have been turned down by both of them. Martin's advice doesn't cover the situation where they don't allow you to switch. Basically I will have to continue being f*cked by Natwest.
