Washing Machine

  • I would never do a wash in completely cold water, but would equally not wash at 95 centigrade either. Everything would fade and shrink!

OP - I don't know why you are/feel unable to move, but from this and your other post it would seem the best option if there is any way at all.
  • Move you have multiple issues with the accommodation you are in.
  • Move you have multiple issues with the accommodation you are in.

The situation of where the OP is being housed might not be something that they are able to move from at present. Its been mooted that they may be within a bail hostel type environment which might be the root of the OPs issues with the accommodation.

OP you still have choices over your laundry situation...you don't have to use the onsite machines with the restrictions they impose.

Like with most things in life you do have a choice but if you don't want to make those changes and choices you do run the risk of just stagnating where you live and bemoaning about your situation.

I've run our washing machines at no more than 30degrees for about the last 25 years, its done me nor the washing any harm...my goodness I couldn't even imagine a 95 degree wash as being standard.

Err 90 degrees is too much for pretty much all clothing and towels. I only ever do teatowels on that kind of wash and only when I've used them for unsavoury stuff, like animal vomit. Usually have paper towels or rags but occasionally have had to use teatowel.
Everything else I wash on cold all the time, I dont use antibacterial either.

I think 40 degrees is fine for clothes most of the time but I would always wash towels and bedsheets at 60. I wash all the cleaning cloths, tea towels etc at 90.

You also need to run a 90 degree wash occasionally to clean the machine. Without that, they get a build up of gunk and can grow mould. I think a machine using only cold washes is very unhygienic.
  • The other concern is that of other people's hygiene... Washing in cold water if you had an illness is surely not good idea as someone may wash towels after, phew & gross... Ripply I used to use 95c and Washing Machine cleaner once a month. I just think standards here should be better but there is no law or requirement to provide that is there?
Sadly I don't have a car to drive to next town to use a launderette so my only solution is to use disinfectant with every wash...
Its not a hostel but a religious community with odd ideas about things as you have been made aware and the only place I can stay until I'm sorted a but financially. I just like to hear your thoughts on these things as landlords & tenants.

My washer is cold fill, but the washing mashine heats up the water, so I dont wash cold.

You could also try ironing anything that can be ironed. The high heat will help sanitise things.

Using disinfectant sounds like the most pragmatic solution then. As you say, you need to protect yourself against others' germs. Some people here use something called Napisan for this. Also soda crystals which are pretty cheap.
