After living of the crumbs we found at the back of the cupboard (yum) Mr T delivered this evening! The freezer and fridge are full to bursting with enough meals for 2 weeks and a couple of boxes of Christmas provisions hidden in the garage away from temptation! Quite a big spend for the first weeks shop but with all the meals planned should only need to replenish milk etc.

    Hi All,

I am desperate to reduce my monthly grocery spend - it's been as high as £600 recently :O :O :O

I have a family of five, and in my groceries include wine, nappies (night only now thank goodness) and all cleaning and bathroom products.

My budget for this month is £350. Last month I think I spent nearer £500 - I seriously need to knuckle down to this as it's what is ruining my budget every month. Having said that, I have been slowly stocking up on Christmas goods the last couple of months...

My month will run 01st Dec to 30th.

So far we've spent £52.88 on our weekly Tescos shop, and £44 on a wine offer for 15 bottles.

In order to keep motivation going I have a board on the wall on which we're keeping a running total of that week, plan is to try to keep below £75. I've split the wine cost in four so we can see where we are - so far this week on track with £63.88.

Edited cos I forgot to say - big part of my new approach is to get it delivered - so I can't get tempted/distracted as I walk round the shop!

    Cheers!

Proud to be dealing with my debts
    Goal of the month - £500 on groceries for family of 5 - Apr 2011 - £620! :( May - £454.85 so far.
  • Hello Brassic :)
good luck with your grocery challenge :) It is my 1st month too :D I don't know if you already do this but when you do your shopping online if you go through www.mysupermarket.co.uk there is a neat little tool at the end when you have finished your trolley that suggests swaps to make your shopping even cheaper :) And you can earn 2 ipoints for every £1 that you spend :) hth

I checked my online banking today & my weekly shop for Tesco (being delivered today) was £44.50 inc delivery so have added it to my total. I was just wondering what everyone else does about delivery charges? Is it included in your grocery budget or do you not include it as its not actually groceries? I think I will be able to come in under budget this week - just!

sweetpea I always add the delivery charge, if I pay it, make sure you are taking advantage of codes and vouchers, usually a few available on the discount codes and vouchers board aswell as on other websites for either additional points (worth 4 times the value in deals) or money off directly.

flossyblog consider yourself added, if I have missed anyone who wants to be added please let me know, going to see if one of the moderators can put the list on page one, just would be easier to find :)
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • Thanks lil_me, I will go & have a look for the discount codes board now, that would be great if I could save a bit or get some extra clubcard points :j
I used to do a monthly shop but it never used to last so weekly is better for us unfortunatly that means 4 lots of delivery charges (don't have any transport) but it still works out cheaper in the end :) Thanks for your help.

 you haven't been using codes, my goodness I won't even order without one :rotfl:here you go http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=520690&page=49 just pick the best one for what you are ordering. I 'think' you can change the order and add them later if you already have one booked. If you can't I would cancel it and do a new one with the codes :D I sometimes work my shopping out to get the better codes, for example if there is an £80 for 800 extra points and a £30 for £5 off I will split my shopping buying extras one week and less the next. Make the most of the codes without buying extras I don't need.

have you thought of trying either every 10 days or fortnightly. I find monthly doesn't work for me either, but fortnightly or every 10 or so days works well. Basically instead of being a set day I order when I know I will need stuff.

  • Thats brilliant thank you so much :A I didn't know that you could get codes until you mentioned it :o That is such a good idea splitting up the shopping too. I think I will give fortnightly shopping a go, never thought of it before! :o if it means I can get better codes to use then it makes sense doesn't it! And I will take nearly £10 off my grocery budget automatically (saved delivery charges) :jWill let you know how it goes, you are a star!
