How long is the grace period where this does not apply?

The grace period refers to the benefit cap. This is explained in the link I previously posted https://revenuebenefits.org.uk/universal-credit/guidance/entitlement-to-uc/benefit-cap/
There is a nine month grace period if earnings were over the relevant threshold for the previous 12 months.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Hi Joker. Every Work Coach approaches claimants differently. However I would suggest that any reasonable Work Coach will not be 'pressuring you' as you are in paid employment. I assume you would like to earn more money... so does the UC system; that's all. You may have to record that you are making efforts to increase your earnings
Once you earn this level of income you move into the 'light-touch' regime and no longer have any interaction with a Work Coach.

This is very high for some low income families in London.

calcotti has answered your question. However I just want to point out that if you're going to quote figures please also say what those figures are. You responded to my post about the (variable) CET with what turns out to be the benefits cap - but I had to go looking to find out what figure you'd quoted. It's just easier and clearer all round if you make it clear what you're referring to in the first place.
