    ok another quick question

if I do it online it says it is immediate and to be ready to put your new plates on straight away

am i given some print out or something to show in Halfords(or wherever) as surely places will not print me plates in advance to put on?

When you assign the plate, you get the option to print out a little chitty, V948 I think, that lasts a short time to use to get the plates made. You can buy fully legal plates miles cheaper than Halfords off eBay, and they will make them with your retention certificate, so you can get them all ready to just screw on the car when you transfer online, and inform your insurer at the same time.

There was someone in the papers with a lot of hoo-haa over a private plate, on here a while ago, that no-one could really understand- he was stopped with his new plates on, and the Police wouldn't believe that the plate existed. I'd carry the old V5, and the asignment certificate for a couple of days just in case.

Bought my plates on line for £11 incl postage. No need for any proof if you pay by PayPal.
Legally, there is. But it's the supplier who's breaking the law, not the customer.

Majority of the plates sold on Ebay are classed as show plates by the supplier.

They do not carry the authorised MFG name or any British standards marking.

Quite legal to sell, if put on its the customer breaking the law.

Which is why I said "fully legal plates"- check which ones you are ordering. ;)

Plates I ordered were not show plates as they carried the makers name and BS number. Spacing was also correct and passed three MOT's with no problems.
