Private Number Plate and MOT

Hi Guys

Im looking to buy a private number plate on retention.

I can assign this to my vehicle online I believe and the DVLA send a new V5 certificate.

What I want to know is what happens to my current MOT? The certificate I have obviously shows my current reg(which will not be what's on the vehicle at next MOT)

Do I have to get a new MOT certificate from somewhere?

Thanks

  • Isn't the MOT more to do with the vehicle chasis number etc as opposed to the registration number?

The piece of paper you get for an MOT is just a receipt. The primary record is online, and that's updated automatically when you assign the new plate.

(PS - you do know the registration's not at all private, and you still need to display it publicly just the same as the old one, right?)

    ok another quick question

if I do it online it says it is immediate and to be ready to put your new plates on straight away

am i given some print out or something to show in Halfords(or wherever) as surely places will not print me plates in advance to put on?

Well, you've already got the Cert of Entitlement or Retention doc, right...?

And when you get the first MOT done on the new plate check the expiry date because they don't always carry the date over if you get it done within the month prior.

With the retention doc you are entitled to that number plate, the fact it may not be assigned to a vehicle is irrelevant.
  • I would be tempted to wait till say mid week when you can talk to your insurance co and get insurance transfered to new number

Bought my plates on line for £11 incl postage. No need for any proof if you pay by PayPal.
