I think it's just a Street View join - if you look at Street view the roof next  to it is split as well.

Yep just a google quirk with that image. These houses really are as ugly and window-shy as they appear. Worse than this is the stultifying lack of imagination of our house builders. They are all identikit. Is this REALLY what the market is demanding, or just what lazy, unimaginative, reactionary, old-fashioned house builders think we want, or can throw up with little care and no effort when it comes to planning permission. As culpable are the councils who let these soulless boring housing estates proliferate.

Or, are the houses built to a price point that allows them to sell. Supply of materials has been difficult of late and some materials have experienced significant price rises. Definitely ugly. Boxy houses do not appeal to me.

Those are the backs of the houses.  The fronts face a courtyard on the other side of the buildings, which is just about visible.  I agree that they are downright strange, though.
