It will have been because the owners discovered quite what a problem it is trying to recess anything into the lathe-and-plaster walls. I grew up in a very similar house close to that one and Dad used to end up fuming every time he had to go into the walls for anything because the wretched stuff would just fall off in chunks as a result.
