Removing the building regs requirement for 2 doors between a kitchen and a WC has allowed some builders to do some silly things.

Just awful.  When we were househunting, I made a list of must haves, must not haves, and compromises.

On the 'must not have' list was a toilet right next to the front door.  It never crossed my mind that some houses may have the toilet directly off a living space.

I find it odd that, despite there being plenty of room, an en-suite hasn't been put into the main bedroom on the third floor.

Cost, probably - but that would have been a far better option than a toilet off the living room.  That way, the space could have been used as a storeage cupboard.

Regulations demand a downstairs toilet.  Not sure where else you could put it in such a small house.

Unlike some here, I'm bearing in mind my humble beginnings. Yes, it's a small and cheap house; about the same floor area as our first one. And where was the downstairs lavvy in that? Out in the blooming yard!

Do you mean all new builds have to have a downstairs toilet? I didn't know that, but I'd hate a toilet just off the living room and kitchen!!

They all need a downstairs toilet that is accessible for use by someone in a wheelchair.

One likes to think that the estate agent had Tropic of Ruislip in mind when he wrote that, given the tone and general area.  He probably didn't, sadly.

Which, with an aging population, is good.  Our downstairs cloakroom won’t fit a wheelchair in, but it does mean that I don’t need to haul myself up (or even crawl up on a bad day) the stairs.  Really long term I would like to turn it into a wet room which will not only give us an extra shower but also mean that we can still wash if/when the stairs become too difficult.

I grew up in a dormer bungalow, so the one and only toilet was on the ground floor.  We quickly realised that we would need to put a second toilet in our old house even before I became disabled, but knew it would have to be upstairs due to the layout.  In the end, it was more cost effective to move than to rejig the house.
