Car registered in my name forge!

Please help me. A car has been registered in my name by a family member I haven’t lived with for 4/5 years and don’t speak to. I received a letter from court for a £800 fine and could even be points! I don’t even have a licence yet! At the time the car was purchased I was 17! Really need help with how I go about this as the court are not listening all they want is money from me but this is forge I haven’t signed any paperwork I wasn’t present at where ever this car was brought from I had absolutely no knowledge until I received a letter for untaxed vehicle but we informed the Tax people I didn’t even own the car!!

You can't get points for no tax.

Has said person been caught speeding when they were bringing the car to you?

I guess you didn't do anything when the dvla sent you a log book to a car you don't own.
  • The car was only registered in my name & not even the correct spelling for my name, not my address. So I never received a log book!!

No I received the tax letter months before the court letter. The fine is for failing to stop I believe.

The person wasn’t brining to car to me it is not my car I don’t even have a license!!

So if the names spelt wrong and it's not your address how come you're involved? Neither the court, police or dvla would know about you.

How did you get a letter from the court and the DVLA if they didn't have your address ?

I have no idea! It was the tax people that initially sent me a letter for untaxed vehicle they may have got my correct address from the Electoral roll? The car has nothing to do with me what so ever I never signed anything to register the vehicle in my name I had no idea about it until the first letter from the tax.

I’m wanting advice on where to go to sort this out I have tried to contact the police and am waiting a response. I have spoke to the court they said I will need to swear on oath which I have agreed to!!

Don’t need judgmental comments tbh I’m a young girl look for some advice. So Any actual advice would be appreciated.
  • I believe the car was registered at my mothers previous address which we moved from around 2 years ago. I signed up to Expedia to check my credit score so I’m not sure if that’s where they got my details as I obviously put my current address and the previous address.

You would have received a v5 if the vehicle was registered to your address. You would have received tax reminders for the vehicle if it was registered to your address. What did you think when they arrived?

I hope you checked your mythical credit score with Experian (expedia do holidays). I'm not sure who "they" is, but they wouldn't have "got your details" from Experian at this time.

Inform the DVLA that you are not/have not and never will be the keeper of the vehicle.
Do as the court request - attend and swear on oath
If you know who has used your details, then inform the relevant agencies that they are the registered keeper

The fine being "failing to stop". Stop for what? What exactly have you had and from whom?

There are so many gaps in your story it makes it impossible to figure out whats going on

If you read, the OP has said the address on the V5 isn't theirs, so they wouldn't have received anything in the post.

OP - just comply with whatever process the courts supply to contest the decision. If you have details of the offence, places and dates, try and find evidence of where you were at that time (receipts, bank statements etc), which can help your case if you do go to court.

I assume currently, the DVLA are thinking you've not updated your old address and then just spelt your name wrong.
