I’m wondering if anyone can help me.

Basically I applied for a current account with Lloyd’s. Everything seemed fine at first my application was accepted, I received my sort code and account number , card in the post etc.. only to receive a text a few days later saying my application has been rejected followed by a letter that says ...

“Thank you for your application to open a Current Account. However, after reviewing it, we are sorry to tell you that your application has not been successful.

We appreciate you may be disappointed, so we'd like to explain how we came to our decision. When assessing an application we consider many different criteria including information you give us and held about you on fraud prevention databases.

Unfortunately, on this occasion, the information we considered for your application has failed to meet our requirements.

Whilst we are unable to provide you with details of the information we took into account, you may wish to make a Subject Access Request to CIFAS- the UK's Identity Fraud Prevention Service-in order to review any information held in your name on their databases”

I don’t exactly know what they mean by this.? What would cause this I’ve done a SAR with both Lloyd’s and Cifas to find out what’s going on I’ve been losing sleep over this

Any help or advice would be massively appreciated

Wait to see what comes back from CIFAS.

And have you ever had a debt in the past with Lloyds or any bank within Lloyds Banking Group?
  • Nope. I’ve never had any debt with any bank before

The only other thing you can do whilst you are waiting for the SARs to arrive is to check what information the credit reference agencies hold for you.

I check my credit file religiously (I do also work in financial services) the only thing on there is a old default from EE but I can’t see how that would have anything to do with Cifas. I recently applied for a credit card that was accepted with no issues so it’s very strange why the they would reject it and issue me a letter about fraud prevention etc..

Depending on what sort of job in financial services you have, and assuming they know what it is / who your employer is, they may not want you as a customer. They would of course not tell you the real reason. The CIFAS thing could well be a total red herring. Hope you can come back and tell us what your CIFAS SAR reveals.

They don't mean anything by it - it's just a standard letter.

There's a senior person somewhere in Lloyds who either thinks this anxiety invoking communication is funny or acceptable. And is a total moron.

Lloyds need to be taken to task for their systems that communicate an acceptance of an application - and then a week or so later tell you 'were' declined, and lock your money up pending an action by you dictated by them.
  • This is why whenever I have applied for any new bank accounts (for the switching offers etc), I don't feel like I'm out of the woods until a couple of weeks after my new account has been successfully opened.
    :o
  • OP check all of the 3 main CRA's as well as waiting for CIFAS.
It might be that someone has taken over your identity etc.

Please tell us that you have never accepted monies for a 'friend' which you then sent on to a 3rd party?
  • I’ve checked all three CRA’s nothing on there that’s unusual. And no I’ve never accepted money from ‘friend’ and sent it on to a 3rd party. I just don’t know why they would reject a current account application and start mentioning Cifas. I have to agree with Soulsaver it’s just anxiety invoking communication.

How do you know this ? Has something similar happened to you before ?
