Are dashcams an investment & does it reduce your insurance premium?

I've noticed the car insurance comparison sites are now asking if I have a dashcam fitted in my car. Does this reduce the price of quotes if you have it? I was recently involved in an accident and the other party tried to reject liability but my dashcam footage proved vital in getting liability accepted. It's only a little cheap kit but definately worth while. Normally spending isn't considered an investment on these sites such as mobiles but since very few people now are honest enough to be accountable for their actions, I don't feel it's an option to not have one. What's everyone else's verdict on this?

Bobbi, think it's fair to say that insurance companies are happier when you have a dashcam but they don't generally discount premiums as it's pretty much impossible to police. There are some brokers e.g. Sure Thing, who offered their own dashcam, linked to special deals, but not really sure this has ever taken off. Personally and for your own piece of mind I think it's well worth doing and is not expensive.0

Ignoring the possible reduction in premium.....a decent dashcam is quite cheap now and a must for most people saving a load of grief if involved in accident0

Though interestingly they are banned in a couple of European countries and others have strict privacy rules on what you can do with any footage - and uploading it to youtube is not one of them!
The problem over answering yes to the OP's question is that is creates a problem where if you forget to switch it on and then have an accident. Will the insurer pay or does it now form part of the insurance contract that saying yes you do have one means you must ensure it is operational at all times.0 -
Worth buying to help establish liability after a collision or prove circumstances. I deal with road accident claims for a living and people telling fibs about what happened in collisions just seems to be the norm these days.
Debatable if premiums are reduced though.
Still a worthwhile investment0 -

I haven't yet been asked when getting insurance quotes if I've got a dashcam, so it doesn't seem to be a factor in the premium yet...
It is however now one of the first things to ask if you phone to report an accident.0 -
If you drive abroad be aware they are illegal in some countries and have restrictions on use in some countries.0

When changed car last year & installed dashcam, looked at effect on insurance quotes. I think one or two did offer some reduction but, by and large, the majority didn't.
And, silly as it sounds, there may even be the (very) odd one who counts a hardwired camera as a modification and tries to charge more.
But I can see dashcams being fitted as standard in new vehicles in coming years.0 -
.....then there have been many instances of windows smashed to steal dashcams !
And from a different point of view, cars where , whatever your own opinion is , the dash cam has turned out to show that the owner was the party at fault in an accident.0 -

This might help a bit. Hope so.0
