Be careful about upgrading an HP machine to Windows 10.
My "technician" decided that I should have an SSD and an upgrade on a 4 year old machine, which would take about 2 hours. Some 10 hours later he had the machine upgraded having discovered that it needed a recent BIOS update to take Windows 10.

My advice would be to use your machine to learn about Linux Mint.

That is not unique to HP machines, there are always unique cases and it can affect all brands.

Anyway it shouldn't have taken anywhere near 2hrs, never mind 10.
  • I knew that I was determined this year to understand more about technology.

Have buried my head in the sand for too long believing that as I do not possess any kind of 'logic' (have failed numerous tests) that this understanding was out of reach.

Your kindness and time in explaining things has given me more confidence and set me on my journey. So thank you.

Just let us know when you are actually ready to get started and we'll guide you through.
Perhaps you can get started on making the installation media. Do you have a blank DVD to hand or a USB thumb drive of 4 or 8 GB capacity or more?
  • I don't know if I have any of those things. I do know that we have thumb drives but understand nothing about their capacity.......at the moment.

    (this is so exciting)

However, have to take my poorly dog to eye specialist today so will look for a DVD or thumb drive
as soon as she is sorted.

    Thank you 'Everywhere'

Just plug one into the USB port on your laptop and (it might ask you) just open it to view files. Right click on the top level (usually where it says it's name) and then click on properties. It should open with a pie chart showing the memory available and used.

The relevant technician is the sort of guy who wanders round with a Windows USB in his pocket and uses it fairly regularly.

The capacity, in GB, will be written somewhere on the casing of the drive.
  • Sorry I haven't been around.

Cannot continue with changing my laptop to Windows 10 at the moment (long story) but will be back in about a month armed and ready to take instruction.
