Vista to Windows 10

Dearest Lovely technology minded people.

I am a 'phobe' so please bear with me.

I have a barely used laptop that has Vista as it's operating system.

My local computer shop are upgrading machines from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for £49.00

My question is.........is my laptop too old to be upgraded and if not do I need to upgrade processing and memory thingies ?

Many Thanks

If a machine has Vista and came with Vista then it's probably the best part of 14 years old by now. That makes it effectively ancient in computing terms :)

It may be upgradable but what is its make and model?
You probably won't be able to upgrade the processor on it (since its probably safe to say they won't making those sort anymore) and memory depends on what it is.
  • I don't think anyone on this forum will recognised "barely used" as a make of PCs , a little more info may help e.g. Maker , model , and memory will help. If you had one with Windows 7 rather than Vista the folks here would save you the £49.00 , since it would be free, but then again the local shop have to charge for their time and that wouldn't be an outrageous amount.

    Thanks for that.

This page suggests it should be okay but you may have issues:

However you can't upgrade directly to 10 from Vista, you need to either upgrade it to 7 and then to 10, or go straight to 10 as a clean install. There are licence keys on eBay and Amazon you can get cheap at half the price, or you can just try it and see how it goes and add a licence later, just tell Windows 10 setup to skip the key. The only real downside is that you won't be able to change the wallpaper and the colours in an unactivated state.
  • Thank You Neil

I have to confess that I don't really understand but as I am determined that this IS going to be the year where I start learning more about technology.........this is as good a place to start as any.

So, what is a licence key ?

What do you mean by going straight to 10 as a clean install ?

And, as my Ram and processor are so old.........do I/can I upgrade them ?

I am not assuming that you have time to answer these questions but if you do would be most grateful.

How much memory does it have? 4GB is good.

Perhaps you want to spend £25-ish and get an ssd too?

If you look on the bottom of your HP laptop (on some units it may be under the battery) you'll see a Vista product key. That's an example of a licence key, except in the case of Windows 10 they don't look like that and they're digital.

The processor is probably not upgradable at a cost effective price point. They are already years old and were about 18 months old when the laptop was first made, but to do so would involve taking the laptop apart.

Memory you can probably get cheap second-hand but the laptop won't be able to use more than a certain amount, probably 4Gb at the most for machines of that period. You may find it runs happily on 2Gb but you won't know unless you try. a solid state drive may help matters.
