For around £99 you can get an older, but newer than yours, second hand machine which is 5 times faster than yours, so dont spend too much money on this one.0

have had a look around and have found 'think pads' reconditioned, but don't know what they are.
everything else is Apple or Chrome neither of which I want.
the think pads come with Windows 7 but am assuming I can upgrade by myself..........

Yes, that's what you want. You can't go wrong with a Thinkpad.0

Yours is the HP Pavilion dv6710ea.
I am actually writing this post with a laptop containing exactly the same CPU. So that tells me that you will need to fit a solid state drive to your laptop and take the RAM from 2 GB to 4GB.
The cost?
https://www.mymemory.co.uk/memory/data-storage/ssd-drives/120gb-ssd.html?dir=asc&order=price
From £15.96 for the solid state drive and from £4 for the RAM; https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=smem9ddh
Windows 10 licence can cost from £2. But I wouldn't worry about that at first, since Windows 10 will work fine without a product key.
So you are looking at £20 or so to refurb your laptop if you do the work yourself. It's easy enough with our help.
Here's a video, showing you how to swap the drives and where the RAM goes;
