  • Hate to reiterate the above, but if you hadn't vacated your rental then a lot of your stress would not be happening.

Why on earth did you leave?
LL can't just tell you , a court is the only place that can evict like this
The OP may not be the type of person who wants to risk a bad reference if they are evicted and then do not find anywhere to buy and need to go back into rented accommodation perhaps

  • Just wanted to say I'm sorry for you - this sounds awful :(
  • Our situation was similar to yours but not as bad. We were looking for houses anyway, but in May the landlord served a section 21 notice as he was selling his properties. We told him we were looking for houses to buy anyway and he was quite happy to carry on taking rent while our purchase went through (which eventually happened in the November and we gave the keys back mid-December so we had time to move the stuff out).

It sounds like your landlord wanted you out though, for the main reason he wanted the place for his pregnant daughter. You really didn't have to leave the property which would have made it a bit easier, but this would likely sour your relationship with the landlord (even if you carried on paying rent) and if it got dragged through court then it would probably affect your ability to find another rental if you did need one, so I can understand why you left.

The worst bit is not knowing when the sale will go through and because it's a divorcing couple, it sounds like they're arguing the toss about something so it's not a straightforward purchase. We had exactly the same feeling towards the end of ours, some legal wrangling with the Land Registry caused a big hold up at the top of the chain and it just felt like it was going nowhere for 2 months.

We had the house packed up ready to go, so there was furniture missing, other furniture in stupid places, boxes piled everywhere, nowhere to sit and eat food, the wardrobe and bed was falling apart because I didn't replace them as we were buying all new when we moved and on top of that we had a two year old toddler running around somewhere that was no longer safe because it was in such a mess. Our son also didn't have his own room which is why we were moving in the first place, so he was sharing our rickety bed until he was over two years old. As a result, he got used to sleeping with us so now he's in his own room he keeps waking up crying because it's taking him longer to get used to being on his own in the dark.

Even though our situation wasn't as stressful as yours, I know how it feels as it's like you're stuck and getting nowhere and can't see an end to the situation you're living in now. It made me feel down and annoyed, like it was a constant struggle as week after week goes by with no progress.

Then all of a sudden, it got sorted and everything moved. We got the news that it was sorted on the Tuesday, exchanged on the Friday and completed on the Thursday so that's how quick it can all happen. Stick in there and hopefully it will all be sorted soon, it's a really nice surprise and a relief when it does and things finally start to move again.

All understandable, but when push comes to shove, most of us are not the type of person to be pushed out of our home by someone who's made it their business choice to rent out property.

No one was suggesting that the OP take it all the way to court, which would be months away. The landlord would surely cooperate if they wanted the OP out and into another rental.

I know, but my point is that legally speaking, you could have said "tough". You did him a massive favour at your own cost, because you did not have to leave when he wanted you to.

(Edit: just realised everyone else has already clarified that - never mind!)

Don't think OP is returning, sadly....
