The car itself is not working and they do not know how to fix it without this problem happening again
OK, so do you mean that the engine still doesn't run?
If so that DOES suggest that the aux belt caused the timing belt to get damaged, and FUBAR'd the engine :(

just been through my phone records.... tried to ring them 28 times over the past 4 days to get updates etc... only managed to get through 5 times (maybe 4, but i'll give them the benefit for one).

They did phone me yesterday (at 17:50)... not been able to get hold of them today though (mainly tired between 17:00-18:00 as this is normally where i have better luck)....

Update (I know you didn't ask!).

They still don't know what the issue is. I don't want to go down the line of "you broke my car" as they might not have done (something might be causing the issue that they haven't touched), plus they'll just get defensive and start to find ways that they didn't, even if they did.

So, I am playing nice whilst obviously saying I need my car. They are happy for me to collect/get and independent inspection (it's my car, how could they not)?!

My main issue is that they never pick up the phone... so they gave me the area manager's number and he is arranging a hire car for me to use, which you;'d probably only get from a dealer garage. So, not too shabby currently...lets hope it's s cheap fix however.

what you want is the opposite of a cheap fix. You need an effective fix.
