Garage might have broken my car...

A well-known high Street garage might have broken my car. I emphasise a word might.

So on Saturday I had a warning light come up on my car. It looked like the alternator has gone.

As I need my car to drive to work (there is no public transport near work), I booked into to said well-known high Street garage because they were open on a Sunday.

They fixed it on the Monday (yesterday). Apparently the issue was a belt to the alternator rather than the alternator itself (I'm not mechanically minded so forgive the poor terminology). I also needed a new battery at a cost of £180 (). However as I don't believe the car has had a battery in its 9 year life, I was prepared to take the hit.

All in all it cost me £270 which I was happy to pay as I would expect him to pay more than that just to buy the new alternator.

I took the car out for a test drive last night and it appeared to work fine.

I got in the car this morning started the engine and let it defrost.

Pulled out of my drive and made it 10 m before the car shut off.

Tried many times to restart the car to no effect.

Unfortunately I do not have AA home start. I therefore had to upgrade at a cost of £110 to AA home start for they would come out and told me to the garage. I have to go back to the original garage because it might be there fault.

Essentially the belt they replace yesterday have also snapped. Unfortunately this belt might have also gone behind my timing belt meaning that I will need a whole new engine rebuild according to the AA man.

My question is, who is liable for the cost? The repair that went on yesterday has obviously failed. however, can the garage turn around and say that the repair failed due to a underlying mechanical problem and that it was the car's fault and not theirs?

You need to get someone to inspect the damage before hal...I mean "well know high street garage" get their paws on it and hide the evidence.

There are lots of maybes and possibles. Either the belt snapped because it was faulty, or the alternator is seized. Has it gone behind the timing belt? Was the new belt fitted correctly?

In any case I'd say h*** are at fault as the belt they fitted has snapped.

The underlying faulty could be the alternator.

Contact the said high street garage, present them with your findings, and see what they say.

  • It might have been the one with the K.

They already have the car back as they needed to inspect it.

I thought about taking it to an independent Volvo man but that was significantly further away plus the high Street garage they said they need to look at it first

Can they show you what's happened? I really think you need to be present and be shown the damage.

    Given this:

I'd suggest taking someone who has more understanding as the garage might easily pull the wool over the OP's eyes if they need to.

There's nothing wrong with saying Kwik Fit, by the way.

The problem I had was that the AA will only tow you to one garage.... And it kind of needed to be quick fit because I wanted them to fix it for free. If I had to take it to an independent garage Kwik fit might not have paid for the fee for the independent garage.

I have seen the damage in terms of the snapped belts

The cam/timeing belt normally has a cover protecting it so if the alternator belt it would most likely not get entangled with the cam belt not seen any happen unless the cover was missing then in that case it could possible

it looks like the the alternator pulley/cluch has seized resulting belt snapping, at this stage of the game its just guess work the only way to find out what went wrong is to inspect the damage by stripping the car down only then will you be able to know whos at fault
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”
