It's not "working". what I mean is all the parts are doing what they should do so there's no reason that it's snapped the belt... Or belts

The cam/timeing belt normally has a cover protecting it so if the alternator belt it would most likely not get entangled with the cam belt not seen any happen unless the cover was missing then in that case it could possible

it looks like the the alternator pulley/cluch has seized resulting belt snapping, at this stage of the game its just guess work the only way to find out what went wrong is to inspect the damage by stripping the car down only then will you be able to know whos at fault

It is an issue with volvos particularly V70s that the alternator belt can be exposed to the timing belt and throw the timing belt. I’m a member of the Volvo forum UK and have seen threads on this.

Unless I am missing something we do not know if the cambelt has been taken out or not
The AA man unhelpfully says maybe
    The garage say no
I wonder if a bearing in the alternator seizes when hot and shows no signs of trouble when it has cooled down
Does it drive an aircon compressor?
It could be something has come up off the road ( unlikely but possible)
Unfortunately I imagine the garage are going to tell you it was the alternator and that needs changing and you will not be able to do much about it.

thank you for the information I wasn't aware that they were exposed the only ones I've come across have been all covered but the old school Volvos were non-interference engines so even if the belt did snap it didn't cause major damage
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

So they phoned and said everything is working.... Ie they can't work out what it why the new belt snapped.

Their "advanced" mechanic is on holiday and they might have to get someone from out of area.

So their non "advanced" mechanics, tyre fitters as they're commonly known, have judged it as all working but cannot tell you if the timing belt is damaged?
Contact a local trusted garage for a quote to collect the car and assess its condition. It may be money well spent.
Tell them not to dispose of the broken belt.

I'm confused. Is it working or not? As I said they might never find out why a belt snapped if everything is working fine. If the timing chain has gone it certainly won't be running fine.

No not working. All the bits that could influence the belt such as the police etc are working fine

The car itself is not working and they do not know how to fix it without this problem happening again

When did the police become involved? Do you mean pulleys?
