I'm writing this reply from my dining room - a space that is only used for eating food when we have visitors. I also use the breakfast bar as my second computer station (but there is a hell of a draught coming through the kitchen door keyhole!). We eat our evening meal on our laps in the lounge. The joys of the 3rd age! I eat breakfast at the breakfast bar... my husband doesn't eat breakfast. I don't eat lunch and he eats it on the hoof. At least we meet up for Pointless every evening before cooking dinner!

I have the table 6 chairs (and a sideboard to keep the posh stuff :D) I also have a breakfast bar with stools in the kitchen.

Where do I eat? mostly in the lounge on the couch. I think this is a lot to do with who if anyone you live with. if its possible to have the sit around the table with the family then great but I live on my own and sitting in silence to eat would be pointless. When friends visit for food its the table all the way but just me its the couch and the chase :D.

Growing up I would always eat at the table but that changed as we got older. First, we had a roach infestation which led to most of us staying out of the kitchen. Then in addition to us getting older, we just ended up retreating into our own rooms.

On my laptray, same as all my other meals.
    :)

I cook a full Xmas dinner for one.... plonk it on a plate, through to the sofa, sit down and eat.

I couldn't eat a meal like a roast on a sofa, you have way too many things could go wrong eg you spill some gravy and it goes on the sofa or you accidentally drop a piece of meat on the floor etc.

Whereas at a table its just a table cloth that could get dirty.

But eating at the table isn't for everyone.
You do what suits you and it works for you PasturesNew.

I understand the chairs for a table could be uncomfortable.

I have eaten when sat on the sofa, if Ive come in from work and Ive got a pizza I sit in front of the TV. A quick meal eg a toastie Ive eaten on the sofa.

Ill definitely be eating meals at the table when I move into the house.

We eat dinner at the table in the dining room every night. In out first house, when we didn't have a separate dining room, I had a drop leaf table to save space which I got out every evening. I think it's far better to sit at the table particularly as DH and I actually talk to each other during our meal. While not compulsory, many people watch television while they're eating on the sofa so it cuts out conversation.

But I have my breakfast in bed!:D

    Me too! :D

When we bought this house, nearly 20 years ago (DD was only 4 years old) we knocked out a wall to make a kitchen/diner. Meals were always eaten at the table so we could talk about our days, except on Saturday night - ‘movie night’ - when we usually had something like pizza or a takeaway and ate from trays on our laps sitting on the living room sofas ( a great treat!) all watching a film together.

Now DD is grown up and moved out, ex-h is gone and I live alone, I have breakfast in bed on a tray but eat the rest of my meals where I always have done (no takeaways any more though :p) although I now have a tv in the kitchen/diner for company :o
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Live by myself in a small two bedroom house. Downstairs apart from a loo - (hugely important) and cupboards is a lounge/kitchen/whatever. I have a small table in the kitchen part and I eat anything that requires a knife and fork there. Otherwise the evening sandwich on the sofa in front of the TV

Using a knife and fork and tray on the sofa is awkward and does seem to attract the attention of Rodney (my lovely but complete a""ehole cat)

I always eat sitting in the lounge with a tray on my lap. The computer printer does have the exclusive use of a dining table

We eat lunch & dinner at a dining table in a dining alcove off the kitchen (specially designed) which has a circular table and 4 chairs and a bookcase
with cookery books and a small TV.
We also have a separate dining room with a large table that we use maybe once a week.
No eating on our laps since we bought an oyster coloured leather suite.
    ETA:
I'm recovering from a foot operation.
Non-weight bearing for the last week, same for this week, then minimal weight-bearing for 4 weeks after that.
Going up and down stairs on my bum.
Spending all day and evening on the sofa.
But I still hop - with the help of my zimmer - into the kitchen for my lunch and dinner at the table.
